as above did a search but as usual i cant use outerlimits search.

after a decent/ semi decent hand held uhf for the zook. can some one point me in the right direction. im a tight ass thats why i want a hand held and the zook is a cheap weeken warrior so dont wanna lash out and spend 400 in a in car uhf.

For $260 you can have a Unien UHF and Aeral delivered to your door.
I wouldn't bother with handhelds, because a "decent" one wont be too much cheaper.

GME 2w hand helds can be had for under $100 ($92 from the abovementioned site) and are good for 5k + easily. I've tested mine and been able to communicate ~20ks away. All depends on conditions.

I have 3 cause I'm sick of convoying with people who don't have UHFs

I will oneday get a mounted unit too, when I can be bothered.

hmm interesting... yeh this is just for convoying in the bush.

If you just want a convoy radio, get $50 one, they work fine.

If you want a 'decent' hand held, a radio engineer on another forum recommends the GME TX6100 that goes for $270 from prestige.

There are hand helds and hand helds.

The cheap half watts are great for being low cost and readilly replaced when they drown in the drink. Range is OK for convoy.

3 watt is better

Marshals for Cliffhanger need 5 watt - we are done with poor comms. Approx $400 upwards. You dont want these in the drink and they will get stolen if you lend them out.

Good brands are icom, uniden and GME.

I've got a couple of 5w Icom 41s's which i upgraded from the previous generation 40s. Absolutely awesome handhelds. I get something like 12-14hrs battery life from a single 2hr charge.

Go a 5 watt, I have a three watt uniden & it is a cracker but only if you are close. Get any more than a couple of k's away in hilly areas & your are stonkered.

We bought a mate of mine a 5 watter & its as good as the GME in my car.

UHF are really only good for line of sight but the more power you have the better.

I have a uniden 5 watt handheld. I bought a hand held because I drive lots of different 4x4's and didn't want to put one in then sell the car and loose the dollars.

My only gripe is lack of volume when other ppl are speaking (I have a noisy old 60) and less reception than if your aerial was mounted outside. I find a big difference in clarity when I lean out the window if the other car is not insight.

If you are keeping car for a while go hard mounted over handheld.

ive got a 3w GME handheld.. goes great for everything i need, and let me get out of the car and use it to guide someone through a tricky bit etc..

without a doubt 100% an incar one is the go! by the time you keep buying batteries and get the shites with lack of range not to mention lack of clarity with a handheld! you will be back on here asking wich incar to get

get an in car and get them to throw in a cheap .5w handheld at the same time. for the $$ unless you have a need for external handheld with range ad in car inthe way to go, but having a cheap handheld is great to assist with recoveries or land to someone without a radio on a trip or throw in the daily driver to listen to ch40 for cops

Just bought a cheapy set of 2 Hand helds ( i have an in-car unit).

$69 from repco at the moment for 2 Oricom 1w hand helds, with rechargable batteries, charger and hands free kits. They seem ok for the money, and they will really only be used as a back up, when someone doesn't have a radio in convoy, or guiding someone. SO they are good for that i guess.

They actually look alright. Its hard to tell how small they actually are, but the unit is the size of a pack of smokes.

I was tossing up between this one, and the tx3220, but settled on the 3220 because size wasnt that critical to me, the 3220 screen shows more info and is a better colour and buttons are more user friendly.
