An easy alternator mud fix you might like to try

Not sure if anyone has tried this thought I might post it for anyone who gets sufficiently pissed off at the muddy alternator problems.

I just went out through mud and puddles recently and had the usual alternator problems. Anyway, pulled it out and found the brushes were worn rather badly, and all sorts of crud was stopping the show. So I replaced them.

A contributing problem seems to be the standard brushes are really short. Probably causes them to wear out quicky and also means the spring pressure that pushes them onto the rings is pretty light. So I got some considerably longer Bosch brushes, filed them down until they fit into the brush holder and then put them back on the alt. They are wider, longer and have a nice amount of pressure ensuring they push all the mud and crud off the rings as they spin.

So far it seems very robust. I'll let you know how it goes long term.
