Running like crap

G'day, i got a 1990 1.3Lt Zook, for the last few weeks it's been running absolutely TERRIBLE...almost undriveable. It idles really low (as low as 400revs), sometimes the idle jumps up to 1300rpm....it seems to have a mind of it's own. The last week, it got a hell of a lot worse, and now it is undriveable. If I give it any more than about 1/2 throttle, it hesitates, backfires, and generally makes a prick of itself. I've put in a carb rebuild kit, new distributor cap, new plugs, new leads, and fuel filter. I can't seem to get it to even idle anymore. Does anyone have ANY ideas, cos we've been having some REAL nice weather here in Melbourne lately, and i'ts a shame to not be able to drive it around without the roof on. Also, whats the best way to check if there's water in the fuel tank?

Cheers
Paul

Sounds like you done some home work Pj,Maybe Check the Pcv valve .
Just unplug the hose and stick you finger over the manifold end.

Or TRy putting motor on top dead centre no1 and check the position of the rotor button it should be somwhere near no1 ignition wire, if not you may have a couple of chunks missing from your timing belt.

Anybody got some ideas for PJ !!

Larry.

If you want to get ride of the water in your tank stick some meths in ass it will combine with the water and go through the system.

As for the carby. "Its a Zook thing" I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a loose wire for the idle. But it does sound like a timing issue. I agree with the others get the timing belt replaced. As specially if you don't know how old it is. Hymmm I might take my own advice there and do mine soon too.

The other thing g13 motors have been known to do is wallow out the key-way on the crank .. great for causing eratic idle ... and sweet bugger all power (as the pulley that turns the timing belt is free to move)

Check the timing belt .. and also check the crank pulley is REALLY TIGHT and there is no slop at all there ...

You might also want to check that the hoses from the fuel tank are clear of any blockages - you can just use an air compressor to pump some air through. I've heard of people getting much in there and then having lots of carby type problems.

I have an extra fuel filter on the line just before it goes into the fuel pump. It seems to have fixed the problem. That seems to support what Greg said.

Hi all,

Well to say I have had nearly every problem with my suzi but they are fixed now. I'll pin my sugestions on the Carbi though I would even get some carbi cleaner just to make sure also what is the temp like in it.
