I have 91, 2.8 dual cab 4x4 hilux
I am going through the centre bearing bush on a regular basis
I have checked engine and gear box mounts, uni's and flange bolts.
I have a lift kit but it is only 2inches.
I currently do no offroad in this vehicle
The vibration occurs at take off up to about 20km then smoothes out.
Any ideas

it is just cheap imported bearings
step 1 get a new ctr bearing
step 2 get a tube of sikaflex black industrial adhedsive
step 3 inject it into the holes top and bottom and let cure 2-3 days
step 4 fit it and never worry about it again
have fitted these to many hiluxs with many engine combos
and never had one fail

kingy, i had exactly the same problem and i have a 4 inch suspension lift kit in my hilux. i think you'll find that something else is wrong with your drive train, you might want to get it checked out - the slip yoke, does it have any play? is the shaft balanced? does the flange directly behing the centre bearing have any play in it? yeh you can get a 1 piece tail shaft made for you but thats abit of a band-aid solution as having a 1 piece shaft on a hilux is abit long and will eventually cause alot of vibration and stress on the uni joints as you will still be conecting to the rear diff at a large angle and you'll be changing THEM on a regular basis instead.
also do you have keepers on both sides (infront and behind the wheel) of the leaf springs? if not when you take off (especially from 0 -20km/h) this is generally when you are loading up most of your torque and sometimes if you dont have keepers on both end of the leaf springs, your diff can dip the nose down creating even more angle on your tail shaft = not good. by having keepers there it prevents the leaf springs seperating under load but this reduces suspension travel slightly but take your pick whats more costly...
i know its alot to consider but it was worth the peace of mind for me especially when im off roading.
hope this helps...

my worn slip yoke chewed a Hardy Spicer centre bearing to bits in about 2000kms.
I replaced it with a single piece driveshaft from a 2000 single cab 3.0L tray top hilux and havent had a problem since!

Hi all, thanks for your replies. I have purchased a new spicer bearing and filled it with 296 Sika. I have been using it for a week with no problems.
Frank your comments are interesting about the suspension, I have had a look at the keepers and they are twisted. I also measured the gap between the chasis rail and the tyre - there is 10mm difference. Spring hangers and mounts appear to be straight, based on this I think I might have to get the springs reset.
Cheers, Kingy
