Hilux power steering box URGENT

Post by Luv to 4B »

hey ive got a 1990 hilux 2.8D. I had a leaking seal in the power steering box so i pulled out the worm shaft and the valve housing from the box and replaced the seal. I put it all back together and it worked for about 4 turns lock to lock then it all locked up. I removed the worm shaft and valve housing again to find that the ps box was full of ball bearings which had all fallen to the back of the unit. I have now pulled the whole box out.
Does anyone know:
How many ball bearings there are meant to be?
How to put it all back together?
Where to get parts cheap if i need to?

Cheers.
My mind is like a steel trap....quite dangerous because i forget where i left it.

Welcome to one of the biggest bastards of a job
I had the same problem with my 84 surf, after consulting the manual which told me under no cercumstances do you pull the worm drive out of the power piston, I decided to find some other source of help.
This is what I learnt.
1: the power piston has a flat side on it with a small u shaped tube held on by 2 screws, remove this piece.
2: Throughly clean ball bearings.
3: insert worm drive so when you look down the hole nearest the worm drive you can see the first bit of the channel.
4: start feeding ball bearings down hole turning the worm drive at the same time.
After a couple of attempts of doing this I got mine back together.
Best of luck ;) ;) ;)
