problem with 4G54 Motor - missing when it warms up

Hi there just been helping a mate with his 90 model Paj . The motor starts fine but then within about 2 minutes starts missing and eventually dies. I've noticed the auto choke stays on but even with me overiding it doesn't make much difference...obviously it runs a bit better. We have checked the timing, given all the dizzy contacts a clean, swapped the coil over with one from another vehicle we know works.....but nothing works. When it is running it smells "rich" and is quite smoky. This is a vehicle that has been sitting for several months and my mate just bought.
keen for any advice tah.

It's hard to rule out a carby problem. Your mate could try a carby specialist, or he should be able to buy a carby kit for under $100. Disassemble, clean, reassemble & test. It's not as scary as it sounds.

X 2 with the carby although it might be an idea to just run some carby cleaner through first and see if this helps.

yeah thought it might be in the carby...was hoping it was something easy. It was hit with a pressure cleaner before we got there too so maybe some water troubles?

Obtain Workshop Manual
= check float level
= check idle air mixture screw (lean one way rich the other)
= Check return pipe on fuel pump if its not returning to the tank it could be over filling the float bowl
= check that there is coolant circulating around the carb (there should be 2 small pipes, one feed and one return) if the carb isnt warming up, the auto choke will not turn off.

thanks, doesn't seem to have a float bowl just a little jigger that lets more fuel in when the revs go up. I'll try the other things when I see him next. Thanks again

That doesn't sound stock. AFAIK, the stock carby has a float bowl. But I could be wrong...

yeah this is a weird cross over model....it has the "newer" body than the old square 80's Paj's but all the running gear is the same...4G54 motor, no power steering, rear leaf springs but a different carby to his other 85 model Paj. I'm going to go and help him strip and clean the Carby tonight....I'll let yuz know how it goes

O.K stripped it down last night and cleaned it out...was pretty dirty and we were hopefull we'd found the problem, blew air and carby cleaner through everything, put it back togeather and fired it up.......ran better than ever....for the first 2 minutes, then it just fuggin slowly dies. I have no idea what would make a motor do this....we played with air mix to no avail, it's like it starves for air as it starts to warm or something???
