Outer Limits 4x4 Board

looking at building a comp buggy for scouts, its for an event called mudbash. its typicaly not very muddy these days mind you. its a kahnacross style event where top speed is never achieved by any vehicle (except maybe the 1200cc VW that was there last year....)

chances are we are going for a hilux, but we are as yet undecided on the engine. personaly id like a turbo diesel, there are others that want a petrol.
V8 is outa the question, V6 is on the outer limits of the equasion.

so basically we are down to a 4cyl engine. we want to mate this up to an auto.

so, what combinations would we be looking at? personaly id love a 1KZ-TE/A340F combination like i have in my surf. it all bolts up and it has power in the right places.

do the gurus have any thoughts on combinations we could run?

I, personally think petrol is cheap horsepower. For a race car, unless you want to spend bulk $$$ petrol would have to be the choice.

x2 diesel would suck for this unless you are happy to lose the race but get the best fuel economy!

Rear wheel drive, light strong and still a decent build quality.

they aint really speed events as such.

untill reliability became a problem, this vehicle was competitive in quite a number of events. 1750cc VW engine with 31" tractor treads


then this one, with BIG horsepower, never won a single event in any of the years iv bin there.



HP means squat overall, its only good for a cpl of events

falcon body on a dyna chassis/driveline and a v8 of some descript mated to an auto of some descript. cant remember details on the engine

Mate you must have not been there last year, many cars had trouble even getting off the start line. There was a hilux that ran but had a lot of trouble with traction so it might be worth looking at how they did it and try something different. Keep in mind its a 2 wheel drive only event. A front wheel drive hilux could be a thought?

If you identify the particular events you want to aim to do well in we can probably give you some more ideas. A car to win the obstacle course is very different from a car to win the mile.

Personally Id go the 3rz the 2wd came out in an auto and for controllable power it would be a lot better than a diesel

it was wet for the last day, and that is the first time it has had rain in years!
that lux had traction problems because the mudbash commitee wouldnt declare it a wet track untill lunchtime sunday, before which most cars were running shitty road tyres or AT's. the 2 or 3 cars with claws or pedes as there dry tyres did fine.

it is a 2wd event, but we want to use the vehicle for things outside of mudbash still. its easy to take a driveshaft out for the event.

not after trying to win the mile or GC, as cars that win them usualy are no good for any other events. quaftumbla, tripple challenge, motakahna, those sorts. obstical course will be easy enuf, the obsticals themselves are of no problem at all.

i do like the 3rz. do you know what auto it came with from factory? and if it will bolt into a 4wd lux chassis?
