if i have a hilux with say a 3l in it, do all other engines from hiluxs of that era(or any other era) just bolt straight onto the engine mounts?
i know that not all bolt straight to all gearboxs(i think), but what about just straight to the chassis?
and also, what about toyota engines that arent from hiluxs, like a 1uz? needs new/modified mounts??

Had a 2.8 3L and swapped it for a 3l 5L motor everything was the same.

1KZ's involve moving the mounts back 55-60mm, but are so, so, so worth it!

Any L series engine will bolt into the same hole with no mods to the mounts.
a 5L-E will require some more wiring work though.

Go the 3RZ if it will fit in your budget Macca

I agree for what he'll be using it for, the 1kz will piss on the 3rz, although there is a fair price difference between the 2.
The 3rz can't compete in low down torque, fuel economy or load carrying imo, yes the 3rz has torque but not near as much low down like a dirty turbo diesel

3rz-fe: 108kw@4800rpm 1kz-te: 85kw@3600rpm
235nw@4000rpm 315kw@2000rpm
I just put a 3rz in my hilux and my brother has a 1kz-te. When running the exact same tyres on them both(as we have the same set) the 3rz destroys the 1kz-te. Eg along the high way where he has to drop down to 3rd gear with just him in the car, the 3rz sits on 100 in 4th gear with 3 people in the car and a full tank of petrol. But out in the bush having a diesel is good some times not being so touchy. But id personaly take the 3rz any day of the week over a 1kzte.

If I understand it correctly, this is for a fun event not a DD so getting value for $$ to keep it within budget is a primary factor, which is why I suggested a 3RZ - pretty straight forward swap, lighter than a diesel and cheaper to buy and not easy to blowup (rev limiter).
My 2c worth

What the hell has he done to his 1KZ? Fitted a 1.5" Press bent exhaust and welded up the turbo or something?
my 1KZ, running 33's will hold 110kph in 5th up the freeway out of adelaide- and thats one of the longest continuous grades in australia.

No... injectors and turbo have been rebuilt. Even with half a tone in my car i would have it all over him.

but needs third to hold hwy speeds? im suprised you need 4th. even my old TD 3L will happily sit on 110 in 5th and 100 in 4th on most hills.
another vote for the 3rz though as the 1kz will be $$$

Flame suit on, If its only a 2wd race go the v6 bomadore and auto. leave the transfer off run a shaft to the rear diff . Youd do it for under a grand easy and motors are a dime a dozen.

there's something seriously wrong there- he needs to get it seen too by a diesel mechanic.
Considering a 1KZ is making 86kw/295nm stock in a hilux, it should be able to blow most hills over no problems.
It sounds like when he hooked up the turbo he's screwed something up- what boost is it making?
Stock should be 8-9psi.
