You notice it more in the colder weather? Is the smoke white? Diesels dont like the cold, well, starting cold in the cold. How long does it smoke for?

As said, diesels really smoke on first start up when cold. Smoke will be white, with a blue tinge. Once warm, as quickly as a minute or so, it will clear. Its also surprising to realise how much particulate actually comes out of a diesel exhaust. Not noticable during the day, but look behind you at night, when a car is shining its headlights through the exhaust, and you will see heaps.
