Isuzu hybrid with a starter problem. Pls help.

I have a Range Rover/ Land Rover hybrid with a 4BB1 3.6 Isuzu in it. My problem is when i start it i often get a grinding noise from the starter as the teeth do not properly engage the flywheel ring gear. As you can imagine this is wearing the hell out of the ring gear teeth.
I replaced the old started motor as the shaft/bearings were warn and the clutch pack was on the way out according to the auto elec. No differance with the new one.
The ring gear was new after i rebuilt the engine and the starter teeth looked fine. Where to go from here? I,m dreading having to pull the gearbox out again to fix it but its just a matter of time before it will refuse to start. Any suggestions on the cause?

From what you describe i would have thought that the new starter would have fixed the noise problem. Is it ligning up properly with the ring gear ? Has the noise been there since you did the conversion. What is the vehicle / box you have the Isuzu in?

G'day Nick,
I know Scottys vehicle reasonably well - its a RR chassis with a Defender / S3 body - looks bloody great.
The gearbox is a 4 speed manual RR.

Gday Scotty ,
Take the cover plate off the bottom of flywheel , Turn the motor over without starting it and check the ring gear for true , was just thinking of the previous prob with flywheel , i have seen one with shape in it . Could cause ring to be in and out as it passes the starter gear.

You might try removing the starter and measure the distance from the mounting surface for the starter to the flywheel teeth,and then measure the distance from the mounting surface on the starter to the gear on the starter when it is in its thrown out position,these measurements should obviously be very close,if not then you have the wrong starter.Never assume that a starter that you are supplied and is supposed to fit is actually correct.I have often been supplied the incorrect starter,to be told by the auto electrician that that is what is listed.

Thanks very much for the suggestions, it will probably be about a week before i have a chance to get around to investigating them. I will post again when i know how they panned out.
