GU steering box in GQ HELP!

I have upgraded my Steering box to a GU one, which is a very common upgrade to the GQ.
Since doing this it feels as if the steering pump is struggling to keep up - when trying to steer fast the steering wheel gets caught up (or notchy).

Its very annoying/dangerous when driving fast through windy tracks and the steering wheel locks up for a second before turning.

Has anyone else had this issue?? Any suggested solutions??

I have the exact same issue with mine, Swapped the box from GQ to GU and when trying to turn hard or fast as you say its as if it looses pressure, i am going to look at swapping out the pump to a GU P/S pump as mine is diesel and i its pretty simple swap

i up graded my sterring box to a gu one then i started to stuff gq pumps bought about 3 of them and they would spit belts off and it was not getting the correct amount of fluid. Then i put a GU one in problems all fixed! When fitting a gu one you have to change the braket to the pump.

it sounds like the adjustment screw on top of the box is too tight, to adjust it put the steering on full lock and adjust so that there is no play, but not too tight to turn freely, if not sure consult your local 4be mechanic.

Got a GU box in mine too and is smooth to drive but when im on rocks etc all flexed up and really need some power in the steering... it feels like im driving an old falcon without power steering :?

Ive just fitted the v8 and using the holden pump and hoping this fixes it...

Hi guys, you can apparently mod the GQ pump to cope with the extra load. Its not supposed to be a costly exercise either. My pump needs to be looked at but havent done anything about it yet. Cheers Loz.

I've heard of people "tweaking" their pumps too, but no one can tell me what they do or how they do it... anyone?

Yeh im the same. Someone did say to me that it has something to do with a spring in the pump. Dunno how true this is but a hydraulic place would be the go i reckon. 1MADENGINEER mentioned this also in another post. Cheers Loz.
