Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi guys just need a bit of advice on the leaf springs on the MQ's. I bought another MQ the same month and year as my other one only this one is lic and in better condtion both diesels.

Anyways my new MQ has leaf springs on the rear that have 3 leafs on them, they seem ok and my other MQ has leafs with 3 or 4 leafs and 1 leaf that bends upwards with the ends of the spring not connected with the others. I was told these springs are 'load carrying springs'. So when u hook up heaps of weight, the back springs go like a normal spring. Im not sure if this is true but which spring would be better for towing a horse float (not mine) with and which would be better for off road conditions.

Sorry if this is a bit hard to understand because it is weird trying to explain

for carrying heaps of wieght and towing your better off with a spring pack that has MORE leaves in it so there is more of the spring to carry the wieght. The leave u speak of would be a greater advantage for towing a float.
Offroad, the less leaves the more flex but not too far cause ull get axle wrap........

You have to remember that when Nissan released the MQ series that were years ahead of the competition.....

Unfortunately Nissan struggled to get a really good suspension setup on the MQ series and as a result we see severl different springpak setups over the entire series......to date I've counted 13 different factory setups !!!

The "over rider" you are speaking of is just that......an overide spring for heavy towing IE: horsefloat etc..... or heavy load work IE: fully loaded with adults /LPG setup/and camping gear + bags of clothes and headding off around Aussie !!

The ride is stiff when unloaded and not really great for flexing up in off road conditions.

Nissan had to please every buyer that wanted a MQ be it for a freway tourer to a farmers rig to a hardcore wheelers rig....... the suspension we see fitted is a package that was devoloped to try and suit all the applications we the buyers wanted.... obviously that cant happen with any great degree of success so we have to re do the paks in order to get what we want from them...

minimum number of leaves will give great flex but be "unstable" on the road and would be shyte to tow with ....

maximum number of leaves + over rider will tow really great and it will handle really well on the road but flex is zero .....

guess who's going to be pulling his paks apart and start exoperimenting now ?????

Thanks for all the replies guys, i will let my sister who wants to use it to tow a horse float maybe ill drive it first time and see how it goes. If it's ok ill leave it as is. If not i might swap the rear springs over to the so called tow pack springs and see how it goes. The car on road seems to drive ok and off road it's doesn't seem to bad.

ill do some testing and let you guys know how i went.
