Hi guys and gals,
what do you reckon, apparently I have a 3 inch exhaust and matched dump pipe on my big girl but she is running standard power and torque?? wtf

I have been quoted $700 for a run on a dyno, tune, adjust fuel pump and supply and install a boost controller, what do you reckon??

this is booked for tomorrow but before I drop off, am I getting reamed??

cheers,

Thats extortion for a tune on a diesel. Unless they are fitting a boost compensator to the pump thats too much. Adjusting the pump is a matter of turning a screw. Not exactly rocket science.
Don't get me wrong I'm not putting down tuners, they do an awesome job and the truck will still benefit from a dyno tune to get temps right with air fuel mix etc. Boost controllers are not expensive. Find out what they are fitting before committing to it.
Do you need an adjustable boost controller or just set at a level and left at that.

I asked him about an adjustable boost controller and he does not put them on diesel's
can you tell me advantages and disadvantages, of fixed and adjustable
thanks,
Matt

just read your signature line. Is this a 4.5 petrol turbo or is it diesel.

sounds way over priced mines booked in next week for about 300, for exact same thing.

Thanks for the guidance, i have cancelled the tune and install and will go elsewhere,
thanks for advice

you can buy a boost controller yourself and install it... its pretty easy.
then just take it somewhere and tune to tune it... should be around 300 for a tune and dyno...
as for boost conrtolers. Turbosmart do a good one for around $100bux

there is thread from a few weeks back that both Giant Racing and Dzltec poosted in.

Giant said $550 for a dyno tune and report.
Dzltec said $200 for 3 dyno runs and report on what needs doing. no tuning would be done in that $200.

now your looking at $80 to $110 for supply of a boost valve, a short length of hose 4 clamps and the time to fit it.

going by Giants prices your $700 quote is about right, give or take a few dollars for varying labor rates.

If you want to do it on the cheap and pay $300 odd for supply and fit boost valve and a cough 'tune' cough. then go for it. Personally if you're the sort of peron that does this stuff based on cost alone. you deserve every thing you get.

Are they adjusting the pump timing as well?

by nushcan1102
Yes pump adjustment aswell, these guys are reputable and do know diesel, if I do it I want to do it well, not "cough" tune it.
Funny thing is I have only just bought it and the 3 inch exhaust and dump pipe were on it, it was not tuned for those accessories so was not making any improvement in torque or power??

What is a boost compensator, does it attach to the fuel pump??Is it another name for the boost controller??

a boost compensator should come standard on the turbo pumps. it pretty well acts like a dual stage fuel delivery to stop your diesel smoking heaps when off boost. but gives more fuel up high when on boost

by nushcan1102
so boost compensator is a different and separate thing to a boost controller then

Did you walk into his shop with "SUCKER" written on your forehead? :D

$700 is WAY too expensive. Quality boost controllers can be bought for well under $100 on ebay. I bought my last one (a GFB unit) for $50 if i remember correctly.

A dyno run (usually 2-3 runs) should cost no more than $170. A tune will cost whatever labour time PLUS whatever extra dyno runs are needed.

gudday

just to sort out whats called what, you have a 'boost controller' that adjusts you waste gate opening pressure.

then you have an 'Anaroid' which sits on top of the injection pump and adds the last amount of fuel at a desired boost pressure - which is adjustable...

And YES you are getting ya "pants pulled down"......

good luck

Nush, when i was looking for a Tuner, i spent a day driving around to a lot of blokes, and having a chat with them.

I explained what i wanted, and they told me there way of getting it for me, and a rough price, i say rough as i need to get a bit done :D .

I think price only plays a part in the whole getting work done, and it does'nt matter what i'm getting done, a Tune on the Mav, or getting a new hot water service, i have to be comfortable for the person doing the work, and i have to be able to afford there price as well  .

Find some one who you're comfortable givibg you're money to and go with them, and once you start with them stay with them.

yep that is what I did with the $700 quote I went to three, two total tossers that I would not let near my car and the third that was expensive but had 4wd dyno, knew 4.2s and had one himself, I think i will end up going back but after I install an intercooler to make sure I get value for money for my $700.

Trust is a very big thing and if a bloke is willing to explain and talk through something I very much like that as it displays no arrogance and a willingness to not treat you or your vehicle like the 120th that he has tuned and "they are all the bloody same" shit .
you know what I mean.
So I know you get what you pay for but how much am I willingto pay for comfort is my own dilemna.
before I get hammered, I am very knew to diesels and want to get up to speed quickly,
cheers,
Matt

I'd say it takes longer then 10mins to drive it on and strap it down.

there really seems to be some misguided people on here.

To set boost and fuel on a TD42 we charge more like $200, $700 is steep. We set ours up to mimick standard EGT's with a pyro .

what exactly do you do for $200?

I am told you have a very good knack of tuning the 4.2 oiler Joel. I am reliably told of another tuner with a dyno in Bayswater who will stick it on it and let you know whats happening and give it a tune for half that $700 quote. Saved a mate a considerable amount of cash after a reputable(supposedly) big name diesel shop told him his pump was shot and would need a full rebuild amongst other things. He took it to this bloke for a second opinion and about $100 later after a quick dyno run and a minor adjustment he was running perfect again. Why do people believe that expensive means you get the very best in servicing and cheaper you will get dodgy work done. I know for a fact that Joel from above post is well known for getting quality results at reasonable fair prices.

So how do you increase your boost without one?

So how do you increase your boost without one?
you can change the springs in the gate itself (turbo smart external waste gate)

for the $700 i'd first get myself a EGT and Boost gauge.

For those like myself - boost and fuel are changed when ever i have a long tow to do with the boat (3 ton) and need to back off fuel to control the Egts.

It aint hard............or rocket science.

and for people that don't have a waste gate with a changeable spring.
and don't say change the length of the rod, that can cause all sorts of problems with boost control.

this thread was doomed from the start. did anyone honestly think asking that question on a very DIY based forum was going to get any other answers. Ask the same question in general discussion say a computer forum and the answers would be very different.

a small edit.

With these cheap prices i really don't see how, with the average labor rate being between $88 to $100 an hour, these people are giving them selves enough time to perform everthing that should goin into a proper tune. More so if a dyno is involved as anyone with a dyno will chage extra for using it.

Hence my question to joel. with out judging him at all, what exactly does he do for $200.
