My dads 2000 turbo diesel Pajero (150,000KM) has a vibration in the drive line under load between 1700 ~2000 rpm in all gears, a few people have looked at it with no solution, I thought I would throw it out to you guys to see if you had any clues.

Is it standard height? Check for excess play between the extension housing and the tailshaft yolk. There may be movement there. Grap the tailshaft where it comes out of the gearbox and see if there is any movement up and down.

Is it Gen 2 or Gen 3? If it's Gen 3 ride height shouldn't matter.

If it's the same revs in each gear, that suggests to me that it's engine related rather than transfer/tailshaft/diffs etc.

It is stock as a rock, he bought it new and has never abused it, the uni's splines and diffs are firm, the fact that it comes on at the same time that he says the turbo normally kicks in may be relevant.

mine is a 93 and does it, i find if i feather the clutch a little as its doing it it will normal stop, so i am starting to think it might be clutch shudder, im going to have mine replaced in a few months i think just to rule it out though

i tried new uni's and got the tailshaft yoke check for excessive wear and the had a look at the diff and said the backlash wast to bad,

how many km does he have, im at just over 300k

Check the engine mounts as it is vibrating at a point were torque kicks in, have a look at how close the metal plates are to each other. Plus if you change the throttle [back off] at those revs, does it alter? BTW you must undo the tailshaft to check for for a vibration issue and move the joints each way, vibration comes from seized joints and you cant tell while its bolted up. Also the early diesels had balance shafts, I havn't checked on these? If the chains were stretched to the max they vibrated

Peter, get on the Pajero club forum, http://www.pajeroclub.com.au/home/publicforum/
Like all vehicle specific sites you may have a wider range of users who may have suffered the same symptoms. Or there are a couple of Mits trained mechanics who post there also. (Mikey is one that comes to mind)
Regards Andrew.
