So its not a bearing but same idea...have to shrink fit a flywheel ring gear onto the flywheel and im too impatient to wait till monday to use the bearing heater at work. Any idea on how long to leave it in there or is it a bad idea?...bout 8mm thick.
Cheers, Josh

When I used to do them it was on a large gas ring, heated till the metal began toe change colour, then slipped them on, gave about 20 secs before it locked on.

most you wont have to go that far, if you keep it under 130 you wont change the properties of the metal
for bearings those thermostatically controlled deep fryers you can buy are awesome!

Stick the flywheel in the freezer too

Or you can heat in an oil bath (in an appropriate container) on a gas ring.

Grimace an induction cook top wouldn't work as the ring gear has too much open space in the middle.
Their designed to turn off if they don't sense anything on them.
We've treid using a wok on a stand on it and it kept turning off as it couldn't sense the base of a saucepan/frypan on it.
Great thought though as it would't subject the ring to the same heat load as an oven.
