Heavy corrosion on Tcase...

I gave my alloy split tcase to a bloke down the road who does steam cleaning truck underbodies, so he could steam the gunk off it.
He gave it back today sheepishly, turns out he soaked it overnight in some degreaser, which has corroded the inside and outside of the case.
Is it a throw away job, or will it be ok do you think? If I paint it, will it sort of seal the outside? There is white powder all over it...

Put some pics up if you can.

On closer inspection it appears that the smooth layer has lifted off in parts, exposing a porous sub layer...
All the important parts seems ok, as it still had seals in it, which have protected the smooth bits.
Some pics just show white powder, some show the flakes...

Are the last 2 pics paint flaking or the metal?

some degreasers are very caustic, I use one that does that, though not to that extent.
Lots of alloys form a natural protective layer through oxidisation, removing exposes the alloy to oxygen and it corodes, normal scratches only expose a very small surface area so the oxidised coating naturally repairs itself. Remove large areas of this coating from the surface, by chemicals or by sanding grinding etc can allow rapid corosion
Magnesium is one metal that corodes extremely fast if the natural coating is removed, if its a high magnesium alloy, this could be what has happened. Washing the chemicals off can actually accelerate the corrosion in some cases because it allows oxygen at the raw surface
looks nasty, and its not shiny anymore, but probably will be OK
the white powder is oxidisation

That case is what is holding your gears together. no-way would I rely on that case anymore.

X2 its now scrap no way id use it tho it also shows how crappy the casting must have been in the first place ..
Tho id like to know what the guy used to eat the outer skin off the casting as it must have been some gnarly shiat to do that ...
