Holley make an off road kit that sorts out all the problems that holley's have with angles.....
Speak to someone like the team at HUME PERFORMANCE in Sydney...they should be able to help you
http://www.hume.com.au/
look on the website under Speciality Carbs
http://www.hume.com.au/index.php?cPath=21_57_68
But as sujested, Gas is a really good option if you want to get it really humming

I have exactly the same issue as you and i've been informed by the good chaps at 'The Carby Centre' in Townsville that the 600 I'm running can be midified to suit the steep climbs we do. Apparently, its a fairly common mod and not that complicated to do.

I was going to put a Holley on My Patrol, but was informed they don't like anything over 15 degrees in incline. But I am interested in finding out about their offroad kit.

Holly Truck Avenger is the offroad carby, works a treat, never missed a beat for me, plenty of nasty angles havnt bothered it and it doesnt flood when you hit a washout too hard either.
Thirsty little bugger though.

A quadrajet will solve your problems.

If you have some one that can tune it
properly.
Otherwise your in trouble.
To many people stuff these carbs up because the think they can tune one.

running a scavenged floatless bowl will solve the problem

how does a scavenged floatless bowl work? What is required to set one up?

no floats
you run a stand pipe in the bowl to set the fuel hight that pipe is conected to a fuel that pulls from the bowl and return to the tank.
you fit a jet where the needle and seat used to be that is sized to only let enough fuel in to give the engine enough to run at full power.
here s one i did useing a 32/36 weber on 1.6 zook engine.

I tend to disagree
Stick with the Hollet truck avenger, a quadrajey has small fuel float chambers that have been known to give issues on fast drag cars on the flat, forget about angles.

Would a electronic fuel pump work? The Carbi Toyota's have a mechanical pump & in my way of thinking would not be pumping enough fuel into the carbi at low rpm (when climbing etc).
I am almost willing too give it a go & use a switch to turn it on as i climb...I wonder?

Can't you just have a lift pump feed the mechanical pump??

Who tuned the Gasresearch? Usually the reverse is true, particularly on hills. A single Gasresearch will limit peak power on an engine over 5.0L, twins are required, the Gasresearch carbies are flowed the same as Holley.

I have been told to get centre hung float bowls as they have a bigger float and don't get as affected by angles as side hung floats, and also to keep an eye on your fuel pressure, keep it around 4.5 to 5psi.

Do you think it's starving for fuel or flooding? I tend to think my one is now flooding due to all the black smoke that comes out when started.

Good luck getting a 2nd hand truck avenger, i looked for ages to no avail.
you could get a 2nd hand one from US fleabay, but its pot luck on what turns up in the mail.
They are made in a 470cfm, 670, and 770
Part no's are hly-0-90470, hly-0-90670, and hly-0-90770. Any aussie holley dealer will be able to get them for you.
Your options are:
buy one new in AUs, will prob be a special order though. I got a 470 recently from Extreme motorsports in Qld (Hunter Racing) for about $500 incl freight etc. It took a week to arrive at my door.
buy a new one yourself from US ebay, may get it cheaper, but then if there are warranty or other issues it will cost you more in the long run.
I have seen them running on sbc's etc off road, they work a treat. Yeah the 670 and 770 will suck juice, but if you're running a v8 offroad why go the bigger ones? Unless youre racing/comp and want a screaming top end, what you really want is strong bottom and mid range, so go the 470.

if all you want from the truck avenger is the flood reduction stuff, you can build that stuff into any side hung holley bowl.
simply fit well sealed vent whistles and use some 8mm rubber hose to mimic the 'cross over vent'. then just run a slightly low float level and slightly low fuel pressure.

cheers for all the comments guys, at the moment i have the details for converting my holley into an offroad one as chevlux has explained, but i am going through the process of getting my engine engineered and am unsure if i can run it on fuel as the engine is older than the car and may need to go gas so will see what the authorities say!

over priced if you want a 670 or a 770, cheap at the current wholesale prices for a 470 though.
