fzj80r auto strength

How long will a standard 4 speed auto last behind a supercharged 1fz fe?? And if anyone knows how much it would cost to upgrade the auto to take it??

It will need a tweak, nothing major, we have been putting modded torque convertors in as well, with kevlar lining for the lock up so you can use it to drive like a manual on steep downhills, and chnging the shift points to help keep it on boost with the higher stall but more efficient torque convertor.

Cant really kill 80 or 100 auto's.

Been running one with our mods behind my supercharged and intercooled 80 on 37's making 190 rw kw.

Thanks assasin. Ive heard you speak of your s/c cruiser highly before.

Do you have any dyno graphs of it. There is a heap of variations ive seen from the different superchargers on the market. Most dyno sheets ive seen from kamtzu, capa, sprintex and vortec. All show the hp gain but never the torque curve... This is what im most interested in..

To make more torque down low, you will lose some performance up high, the TRD and sprintex units with butterlfy to divert boost make good off idle torque, the CAPA fixed gear type units make more as the rpm gets up so boost line is directly related to rpm.

I went the CAPA route, and have fiddled with timing and torque convertor adding a slightly higher stall to get some boost in faster, but made the torque convertor more efficient to get the rpm back down once the vehicle is moving. It works very well.

Its also fair to say its a bit nuts in low range with 4.56 gears, 25% transfer reduction,a nd the more efficient torque convertor, when the brakes are cold, you have to be careful in low range, or it moves off upshifting gears on fast idle while you push hard on the pedal.

Including new torque convertor with kevlar lining and lock up switch to lock up torque convertor any gear any time, internal fixes, temp gauge so you can keep an eye on it works out under $2.5k and just needs normal service interval from there.

Doing a 5 speed TD one at the moment.

I have exactly the same set up. 4.5 gears and 25% reduction. Im not after high end power anymore (but still good take off at 100kph). Im after low down torque, towing a big load in soft sand and deep water crossings etc.. And economy

In your experiences, which would you choose... Keeping in mind I still want an automatic...

Ls1 (easy and safe, long life in standard format)

4.2TD 1HDT upgraded and intercooled (low torque and good in water. Not very good in automatic format and slow as hell at 100kph)

Supercharge the 1fz fe (more torque than diesel or ls1 off idle, but not so good in water (dizzy)

Price is very similar for all 3...
