horrible banging noise

i have a problem with my 4x4 theres a horrible banging/ clunking noise coming from my transsfer case, and im loosing drive to the front end could this be the result of the chain drive that goes to the front driveshaft output slipping?? is this a known problem for these to fail?

It has been known to happen - yes. Although I don't think it's common. I was also present when a Gen 3 stripped some gears in the transfer case - fortunately for him, under warranty.

ahh yes well im almost certain that this is my problem but wasnt sure how likely it is to happen, i guess im up for a new gearbox, funnily enough i met a bloke on the trails today and he has 2 spare pajero's that i can have parts off so i might have to go see him tomorrow. thanks for ya help scott.

This happened to mine.. new transfer and away you go.

hey guys i've found a gearbox but it turns out that its a base model pajero without the centre diff and it has the free wheeling hubs on the front does anyone know if this box and transfer will work in mine which has the centre diff lock and no free wheeling hubs. please help

not 100% but the whole combo would require the free wheeling hubs to be fitted.
Is the gearbox shagged as well as the transfer? if it is just the transfer then whay re you looking to replace both?

yeah the gearbox is on its way out too it grinds going into 1st and 2nd gears so it will need replacing aswell, i can get the gearbox and front diff assembly but i will loose my air locker for the time being. ryan

ive also got that problem in my 84 swb. its got new uni joints and cv's so not them but still manages to make the silly noise. it still spins all 4 wheels but i hate the noise its making.
but ive got it booked in for next week monday to get looked at/fixed so ill let u no how i go too.

hey guys i just done a bit of a test on my paj and it turns out it is def in the thansfer case, i removed the rear drive shaft and got someone to do a foot on in 4llc and the fron drive shaft was not turning so that says it all. time to go pick up this other box and case and wack her all in. ryan.
