ticking 1hd-t

hi everyone just joined outer limits in the hope that someone has experienced the same problem and can shed some light on the situation.
Sorry for the lengthy post but i figure all the details are needed to diagnose problem.
about 2 months ago purchased a 91 model vx sahara 80 series auto with a 1hd-t motor with 270 on the clock, beautiful car verything works factory lockers, centre console fridge, duel air, was absolutley stoked.
first weekend took the car up to oriely's (very light 4x4 track) to see how it went offroad, opened it up to 115 on the highway on the way home, was almost home after a four hour drive and red turbo light flicked on briefly a couple of times, popped the hood a few minutes after, noticed that fan waterpump alternator belts were loose, locking bolt on alternator had sheered off (common problem i'm told), not sure if engine got hot.
next day told the previous owner (workmate) and he informed me that the car had never been over 90 k p/h for 4 years, was not happy!! should of been told this when i brought the car. (soc)
about a week or two later i noticed an inconsistant ticking noise (very similar to a crook lifter in a petrol motor) coming from the motor just as it popped into fourth geer, kept driving thinking it might of been sloppy valve clearances. checked valve clearance (shim and bucket) they were all to speck or .01 to .03 tight
took the car to highway diesel bloke came for a run while driving figured it was auto or turbo, back at workshop loaded revs against the auto to make it make the noise while not moving and came to conclusion it was the turbo, when he reved it to about 3 and a half quickly on and off out of gear it ever so slightly still made the noise rooling out the auto. went home long story short changed the turbo to no avail noise still there not happy
kept driving until noise started to get worse (more common). the noise was only there with the motor under load and was getting worse like clockwork ,present day now it makes the noise in gear at idle sometimes out of gear. have only been driving since to diagnose. brought an automotive stethascope could not find the noise anywere in the top end, head, injetors, injector pump, alternator, waterpump, oilpump, idlers, timing belt pullys.
took belts off (alternator water fan) , took it for a very quick run noise was almost completly gone but was still there, which has led me to think that the extra load on the crank is having a direct effect to the problem. i know these early 1hdt's had big end bearing problems and have also been told that gdgen pins start off as a very slight tick and get worse like clockwork, which is what i have my money on
the only other thing i havent told yuz is that the noise is in time with the cam shaft revolutions wich spins twice to every turn of the crank i believe
so in conclusion i thing i'm in for a bottom end rebuild but want to be sure before i spend any more money, i'd hate to rebuild the bottom end and put it back togethor and hear that #@$!&%$# tick
any help would be very apreciated and thanks for your time
