Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi guys, i did a search and i know there is heaps of info on this but the search function would not bring any thing up for me. I wanted to know if the GU power steering pump is bigger than the GQ pump? If so is it a straight bolt in into the GQ? Can you run it with the GQ steering box? Mine is a 98 GQ with the 082 steering box. Cheers Loz.

My Patrol originally had a no numbered power steering box and it started to leak etc so I replaced it for a bigger 082 box out of a 1999 gq ute with has a larger pitman arm (stronger). Straight fitment but you already have this.

I was told the differences from 082 to gu unit was a lower pitman arm and the steering arm is then attached to the top side not the bottom and the lock to lock was slightly less in a gu.

For strength I believe they are pretty much the same, but the tie rod end of a standard arm will not fit a gu box. You need to get an upgraded stronger unit with interchangeable ends and use one end gu and the other gq. Snake racing sells the exact thing I am talking about, or modify the steering arm accordingly.

approx the same CC/rev (volume) although flow control valve and releif settings vary widely, as they are not precisely set. Mods to increase flow and pressure are easy and cheap to do.

Thanx mate. So you can increase the flow and pressure of the GQ pump.When you say easy and cheap can it be done yourself or do you get a steering specialist to do it? How is it done? Cheers Loz.

the actual 'work' is easy. knowing what to do isn't. The main problem is it is more a hydraulic tech service rather than a steering guy. As to do it properly you need a hydraulic test bench.
