1999 Discovery

G,day fellas,
Just sold my nissan ute and was looking at a 1999 discovery. Never owned a land rover so dont know much about them, thats why i have a few question about them.
For the discovery is it easy to mod? it has IFS in the front or coils? Offroad capability??? all over good car for normal and some serious 4wding?? And anything bad i should look aout for?

1999 was change over year from disco I (early 99) to disco II (late 99).
No independent front suspension until disco III.
Disco I front suspension uses radius arms + panhard, rear has lower trailing arms + upper A-frame.
Disco II front is similar, but longer radius arms. Rear has long radius arms + watts linkage.
Some disco II have rear air springs, otherwise coils like disco I. Some also have ACE (active cornering enhancement) and traction control.
Engines were V8 efi, or diesel; 4 cyl 300Tdi (disco I) or 5 cyl TD5 (disco II).
Guards need trimming to fit larger tyres. 2" to 3" suspension lift works well - disco II may need mods to watts linkage.
Larger tyres will punish the weak diffs, axles and cv's.

So looking for a 92-97 V8i at the moment, major issues with a 2inch lift a 33s?
It's just a spare truck, but still want some capability.
Are ARB lockers ok, or better to head for maxi?
Will I need diff/drivetrain mods to handle 33s and reasonably rough terrain (not competing)

Maxidrive went out of business over 12 months ago so you can't buy their lockers new anymore. The ARB lockers will be okay but the axles will need upgrading otherwise "ping" will be a commonly heard noise. The later 3.9 V8's with the auto were a competent off roader .. just don't make the suspension too hard when lifting it ... go for soft as it will go further off road.

A toyota 8inch centre convertion is getting more popular these days and can be done very easily.

Sorry for the *noob questions
But.....
Can I run 33s with a 2inch lift without guard cutting?? What tyres can I have without guard cutting, or is cutting the only option? Does somone do a 'nice' looking flare. I just hate the look of badly cut guards.
Who/where/how much/difficult is it to upgrade axles? Just a matter of sliding them in like the old series 2??
Am looking good for a 96 ES
So i'll be cruising in luxury (with an attached fuel tanker)

If you go ARBs then Hi Tuff axels go straight in. Or send Grimace a pm as he has a mate with a heap of old / new maxi axels.
Toyota convertion you have to re stud the centre and machine out the spindles and front balls. Then its all bolt in.
