How to make spare wheel on a GU secure

Had some low life steal my spare wheel on the weekend, 2nd time this has happened. The tyre loss isn't such a big deal as the tyre didn't hold air anyway and I have plenty of other spares in the shed. But they did take the three lug bolts as well.

What I want to know is what are others doing to keep their spares secure. Can you get locking Patrol lug bolts, or have you figured out a way to use a padlock or other locking device

with my spare wheel holder i can lock the rim the the holder with a padlock and then i have a hole drilled in the end of the bolt my hight lift jack bolts on with so i just screw the nut on the put the lock through the hole hence cnt undo nuts cant flog my crap. this idea could work with your spare wheel holder.

My GQ had provision to use a padlock via the style of the tyre holder the GUs are a solid unit that don't seem to allow for the use of a padlock.

I guess I could drill some holes in to allow the use of a padlock.

Just curious to hear/see what others have done

Hi Grimbo,
Yes, you can get lockable lug nuts for your spare tyre.
They are around $80 from nissan.

My 99 GU wheel carrier has a locating stud on it which helps align the wheel on the door. This has a hole in it and I put a padlock on it.

Maybe get an earlier model GU spare carrier?

looks like my wheel carrier is very different then because as it is there is no way a padlock could be used. It's on a 98 DX

I don't have anywhere to do that. My carrier is a solid metal shape with no holes etc in it to thread a padlock or chain etc

If there is no bracket or anything for a padlock, don't modify your rear tyre to fit a padlock...

My opinion would be the lockable lug nuts; it's a lot more convenient. Padlock costs $20-30?? Plus the time making a bracket or whatever... $20-30?? Plus your own labour charges,

I bet you can get a better price from nizzbits from paying that $80, ask him... worth a try dude ;)

good luck Mr grimbo.
