G'day guys, got given a 1.3 in need of a rebuild today and have decided to chuck it im my 1ltr. I am hoping to increase the performance as much as possible in n/a form so in looking for a set of high comp pistons/hypernetic or forged would be good. I am unsure if i can use gti ones as i knok they run higher comp. The only performance orientated kits i can find are in the u.s. though are there any local makers of decent pistons to suit or will they have to be custom.

Asian autoparts of Az have been around quite a few years with their sumo kits.. I remeber them from the old avenza email lists (8-10years ago now) Hawk have been about just as long if not longer.

Chasing higer comp in a NA carbed 1.3 is going to be difficult, they like to ping on stock compression let alone upping it.

cheers, i have shaved the head on one before to raise comp about 3/4 of a point and only run 98 octane with no probs and heaps more power, i will be adding a webber carb, cam regrind and webber along with a decent ignition system to give the old girl a bit more poke.

ditch the webber as it a ShortyIQ pain in the arse, get a single point injection system and you will be way better of.

You will probably find you will have to get custom pistons made , I was quoted 500 dollars each , 1.6 litre pistons will fit as the bore can go out to 100 thou , the only problem is the pistons are a little higher and would project through the block about 40 thou , you would need custom rods as the gudgeon pin is also larger and they would need to be shortened or a crank regrind to offset the little ends , porting the manifold and matching them , removing valve guide material from ports , a cam regrind and a single point injector will perform much better , but would probably still cost 1200 dollars if you can do it yourself and obviously more if you pay someone else to do the work.

This is why everybody goes for the upgrade , as it doesn't cost much more , Cheers Paul.

webber is just a quick fix, eventually i will go jimny injection or something but for the moment i just need more air and fuel so webber it is.
I think i will order one of those high comp U.S. kits in the next couple of weeks while the aussie dollars above 80c I would reall like comp about 10:2 but i may have to settle for 9:5 looking at whats on offer.

The easiest way is using the 1.0 Lt 3 cyl Suzuki piston. Is a match but a Flat piston. If you are looking for forged piston then that's another story. If looking for more compresion you can get the 3 cyl piston from standard up to 60 over. And it is available in aftermarket brands. Just check with you machine shop. I don't expect them to have it but they should be able to find it for you. Is it worth it. I would say yes. If you are rebuilding the engine, it will be for the same cost as a sami piston.

If you want to go for jimney injection later you will need 4 valve pistons or all this exersize will be a waist of time as the head will not go without releiving the pistons meaning another rebuild. Get vitara 1.6 efi 20 thou and BB jimney rods bore the block 20 thou and use a gti or bb crank that should give you compression and revs

sounds like it may just be easier and cheaper to shave the head till the required compression is reached. :puppydogeyes:

hey i went to the motor shop and they said that decking the head, the block and flat tops will give minimal increase in power but a bit in torque. Mine is 17thou over sized just due to wear and tear which mean it will have to go to 40thou over. I asked him "would that effect the life span of a alloy motor" and he said "no". so I'm pretty happy with that and will order from here in about 47 mins :D:D:D:D:D

Steve King can manufacture pistons. But he might require a sample or drawing though. (he is also out for while, i can ask him when he gets back to work)

I know of a guy who bored his out, used vitara pistons, its now in the area of a 1.4ltr with alot lower compression if your going turbo route

Did you go and find anything out about these? I might look into it as we have a 1.3 that we are going to rebuild and try to get as much out of it as possible n/a. Unless I can get one of those little subaru superchargers cheap :lol:

I will ask at the suzuki shop during the week about the 3cyl pistons
would be good if it was true. I considered going a toyota blower or turbo but the fuel injection and ecu managment side of things is more than im prapared to deal with atm. I would consider it if there was a decent weber to use for a blow thru setup, but realisticly i would want to monitor and tune any boosted setup properly especially when taking the car to remote areas which kind of rules out a carby. It would work as a draw thru but you cant run an intercooler as if your car backfires the fuel that has pooled in the intercooler will go bang.
After skimming the head on another 1.3 i would say that it gives more power and driveability than almost any other n/a mod bar maybe camshaft which im yet to try, didnt ping either on 98 fuel.

I was thinking low boost (no more than 5psi) drawthrough setup so it wouldn't need an intercooler and an EGT gauge coupled with Air/fuel ratio guage to get it running schmick and reliable. I don't have the time or the money to be playing around with it tho at the moment because of other projects.

If you use it for 4x4ing especially in the sand the you will need an intercooler or it will be detonation city and heatsoak will cripple performance. If high comp pistons are to hard to get i may even consider a turbo setup but this wont happen till after x-mas :cry:

If it's low pressure boost and lower compression and keeping an eye on the fuel ratio I think it'd be fine shouldn't get too hot. But then again I haven't tried it so i'm just speculating.

ok i just skim read this so dont flail me if i happen to bre repeating others.

g13ba swifts pistons where flat tops, i see them go for around au$80 from the states (+post) just hang oout till you get a late model listing)

gti pistons have the valve notches iin the wrong place and i have read many claimss they work its seems a silly path

which 1.3l you rebuilding?

(you know if you go with the 1324cc crank, gti rods and vitara oversized pistons you would be near the 1.4l mark and 9-point-something compression... but i wouldnt want to tempt you :lol: )

So what are you doing to compensate for the cam timing that you have altered by skimming the head?

I have done this mod before providing a noticeable gain and no ill effects in regards to camshaft timing
skimming enough to raise comp by 3/4 of a point seems to be close to the limit though, i dont know if its possible to skim any more without running into probs.

I'm doing it to a G13A 1324cc. The shop owner told me to only run it on premium fuel as it will ping other wise...
