Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I am now in the market to buy wheels and tyres for my 4x4 and would like some info on this...I have been looking around on aussie sites to get an idea whats available and prices..
I am after white steel wheels sunraysia style with alot of offset and cant make up my mind on swampers or baja claws....give us your comments folks....

you want the rig to be street legal or not ?
swampers are not dot approved so cant legally run on the street

road legal = baja claws
not road legal = swampers

EASY

Silverstones...aggresive high void open pattern...the original "V" design...35x11, dot approved (all european codes), street legal, 6 ply and best of all you can get them for under $260, fitted.
I run them in comps at 5 to 8 psi with no bead locks and they are awesome.

SWAMPERS

If you are concerned about daily driving duties, get some cheap road tyres aswell. Keep the swampers for offroad.

You wont find a tyre that does both on and offroad duties really well. You will have to compromise. 2 sets are more expensive and a pain in the ass to change over every weekend, but you have the best of both worlds.

Yep thats what I reckon get swampers there waaaaay better than claws and just keep your old rims and tyres for on road better for your bearings driveterrain

From first hand experiance I prefered my claws to my swampers, I found that the claws were better on more surfaces than the swampers ..
But hey are really farken heavy (mounted the 35's claws were over 40Kg) much heavier than what the swampers were .. and on a Zuk with only 1.6 very old nags under the bonnet you felt it .. especially anywhere you had to spin em up a bit ..
The claws were OK in the dry onroad but totally sucked in the wet, and I loved the look of the claws as well ... The swampers were OK on the road wet or dry supprisingly .. still you needed to be paying attention if you know what I mean.

the claws also ran a little shorter than my swampers did.


Do you need a tyre like a claw or a swamper though ?? Will an MTR or the like suffice ??

since this will be the first time I buy tyres like this I need all the info I can get to make the right choice as whatever I choose will be costing a few grand including wheels...
sometimes I think why not just save yourself and stick with what I already have....35" bfg muddies on standard rims.....
one thing I know will be dreading the day when the 4x4 shop salesman tries to convince me to spend more on some brand or style I dont want...lol

depends on the type of 4x4ing you doing
comps and stuff i'd say boggers all the way, no doubt.
weekend 4x4ing i'd say claws but is u just go every now and then i'd get the pro comp X-terrain which is cheaper but has a similer tread pattern to the claws that or a set of BFG muddies.

personal prefrence: i hate claws. not a fan on xterrains either really.

if your using the bfg 35s for on road. do you want to go a bigger size than 35?
if so get the swampers for sure.
if not then either swampers or simexs.

boggers work really well if you have enough power to turn them. cant really justify the price tags for just driving on the weekend.

but go the swampers. you know you want too

if anyone from interco would like to sponsor me i would advertise like this for days on end.

i never said i liked the x-terrains i just said if u wanna cheap lookalike of the claws
but yeah i agree swampers or centipedes
same with the centi's if u wanna cheap lookalike go the mongrels.

ok I have found a supplier for the tyres now it appears getting the right wheels is a bit of a drama...
15x8 steel wheels are commonly available but need to find one with a deep dish or negative offset as I dont want to run spacers(illegal on road).

looking at 50 mm negative offset or maybe a shop out there can modify or flip the centres...
you see unless I do this fitting a 37 or 38 inch tyre will rub against the leaf spring on full lock of the steering..
anyone know???

well the daily drivers are taken care of with these.......I already have....35" bfg muddies on standard rims.....




SWAMPERS on a set of 8" rims
use the swampers just for play...... this is the system I use and it works a treat

Swampers are overrated bloody 500 bucks for a tyre

The only good one they make is bogger and then lug chopped.

My farm lugs I picked up for less than $200 per tyre

So if you are going to run 2 sets of treads you are still compromising on the offroad with Swampers.

We still have to get em up there to where-ever we wheel so that means tray,trailer etc. So why would you spend 2500 on 5xtyres when you can spend 1000 on 5xtyres and get as close to 100% traction as you can get?? (barring dozer tracks)

And one other thing since I'm venting my spleen, is I guarantee you that If my truck went through a boghole, snow, any slippery surface it would :
a. Get further than you in swampers
b. Do less damage to envir
c. Last Shedloads longer
d. Do less damage to my vehicle (cuz I ain't spinnin no wheels)
e. run outta points to argue on

I would also probablt bet my left nut that if you had swampers with twin lockers I would still be right up yer arse with opens and trac tyres.

thats well in good in the land of sloppy mud called victoria, but here in nsw we are blessed with this stuff called rock, now it may be a hard concept to grasp but rock and tractor tyres will not got to well together, Trac tyres dont bag out and grip as required, Swampers on the other hand do and work very well. They will also do thier job well in the small amounts of mud we have.

i personally would have swampers (TSL) over the claws, i streeted swampers for about 8 months and got good KM's out of them.

depends on your size.
for 35's the 35x11.5 centipedes are excellent and beat the BFG's both on road and offroad.
36's...swamper tsl's if you have a light truck ....[mines heavy and i lose too much height]
38's...swamper tsls are awesome offroad but crap on road due to balance and vibrations...they hang on well though.

So In NSW you have rocks well well ..

Trac tyres I run hace 1/2 water 1/2 air can deflate to 4psi without beadlocks now if there was a cure for stupidity

and besides why is it that in the magority of rock crawling comps the trucks have swmpers tsl or bogger or maybe even claws and why is it that pretty much all the trucks in mud wars have tractors tyres??

its simple really claws, tsl's and boggers are better for rock and tractor tyres are better for mud

I run 35" Radial Claws on my FJ40. They have done 15k onroad kays and a few thousand offroad over the last year and a bit and have worn well. Onroad they are excellent, a bit slippy in the wet, not too noisy and offroad in general they are great. At around $350 a tyre they are not cheap.

I believe you need to experience for yourself what each of the tyres you talk about is capable of. Go for something relatively cheap initially (Silverstones perform awesome for the money) and get out with other 4x4s and see what you like. You can then use the Silverstones as a compromise road tyre if you wish to go with swampers or similar later. You may find you don't need to and you've saved a bunch of cash you can spend in other areas like suspension.

Yeah Tonka, it is funny stuff

There is a lot of truth in what you have writen above, asking for advice on tyres is like asking your mates what chainsaw to buy, everyone likes to think they have the best and will rarely admitt that their equipment is lacking (in any department ) the guy with the Stihl will swear a blood oath on his saw, another mate will say turbo Husqvana is the ultimate, and when you go to a sales man he says GMC because he makes a huge margin on that brand.
Simarly with tyres everyone is diferent, two identical cars with identical tyres usualy will have two totaly diferent drivers, so they will both want diferent things from their tyres, but you need to get out there in the slop, the rocks, on the freeway, in the shale and on the clay to see what all the various tyres do under diferent cars and drivers in varing terains.
It's your money Ralph! spend it wisely and spend it once.
