but gees these things are gutless! like, really bad...

Dont know if i have a wish list as yet.. just sold my 97 grand cherokee, and am about to sell my 95 cherokee...will see how much i get for it..

Also, need car parts? check out carsrus.com.au....

I felt mine pulled pretty well considering engine size/body weight, it was quite happy to pull up nasty hills without the need for downchange.

Add a pod filter for a cheap power boost, but don't take it anywhere dusty/deep with the pod fitted, for that switch back to stock filter system (I removed mine, but is easily reversed process).

hmmm, already has a pod filter...might feel a little sluggish jumping out of a 250hp jeep...but, fuel economy...

The 1600 isnt the best motor for the little Fez. Hills really slow the fez down specially when you have a full load and a full tank.

Please dont bash the cat out. A decent high flow cat will not restrict power noticably at the level the Feroza puts out. Bashing them out is a dodgy hack way of doing it. They are not that dear. I got a full stainless 3 inch magnaflow 200csi metal core cat for $220, so a 2 inch ceramic cat isnt that dear at all. A decent set of extractors and exhaust system with high flow cat will net a increase in power. Checking the pressure of your tyres also helps, too many people dont pay attention to this and get crap economy and handling as a result. Also they pay a fortune in prematurley worn tyres. The Feroza is not a powerhouse, but they go well for what they are. A big killer for your car is the 31's. These are a significant increase over standard, but your car has had no gearing correction. This means that you car is working out of its efficiency range and is also pushing a much heavier and harder to rotate tyre. Your speedo is also out, so you are probably not realising your correct speed. Your speedo will be reading under your true speed. The lift and tyre size increase isnt helping too as it is adding extra aerodynamic dray due to the increase in height.

As layto says - with the available gearing the tyres etc keep the engine out of its optimium operating range - and the easy options to completely fix the problem, except to swap back to smaller tyres are "zip"....

The black - air intake box, extractors and a propper tune will all make little improvements - but the engine is never going to make enough torque at those RPM to be completely satisfactory.

As for smashing the converter........

If you ditch the black box, say goodbye to lower rev torque = less useful offroad, particularly with bigger rubber.

nope sorry have to respectfully disagree with you there, even a high flow cat restricts these beasties .. biggest single power improvement i got out of my Fez was to remove the cat completely and run a free flow exhaust system with extractors.

Having watched cars on dyno's back to back with and without cats there is bugger all difference in it at the power leve we are talking about. Besides no cat is a major fine and EPA no no over here. Considering that the police are pushing very hard on EPA emissions fines, why would you open yourself up to trouble for what, a gain of 1kw. Which is about what you would gain if you deleted the cat from a decent exhaust system.

Nice experimental comparison here. So what you are saying is compared to a fully stock exhaust inc cat a complete free flow exhaust with extractors minus the cat was heaps better. Hence to this argument your assuming the loss of your cat gave you all the power increase and the extractors and rest of the exhaust did nothing  . If you were going to make a successful comparison here you would have to have a perfectly fine std cat (not blocked or falling apart) vs a high flow cat vs no cat. With these conditions alone I don't think you will find significant output differences worth warranting as layto explained.

Its not possible for a driver to detect small differences in power ( 5 - 7% is the generally agreed minimum...... for experienced testers ) by seat of the pants testing so a bashed out cat ( if it was in reasonable condition ) on a Feroza just isn't going to be detectable by that means.

Its just too easy to kid ourselves, if its louder, deeper, sounds better, cost us money or was our "pet idea" we swear it makes more power etc, etc. It just plain human nature, but i've seen this blown out of the water by dyno measurements so many times.

Not talking about exhausts specifically but some of the biggest clangers actually made less power than before they were modified, but the owner swore it made "heaps more" before it went on the rollers. Obviiously must be a faulty dyno......

Cats are effective devices, not overly expensive and make little difference to the power output of the engine ( if in reasonable condition ). I don't believe they are a smart thing to trash.
