front spring question

guys,

has anyone ever tried reversing the front spring mounts. ie mounting the shackle at the front and moving the spring eye to the rear. basically turning the suspension around to be same as 40 series.

was looking at the setup on the chassis, and was thinking i could kill two birds with stone, you'd get more lift and rotate the front pinion towards the x-fer case. i can't really see to many drawbacks to this, may ride a bit rougher, but 40's ride ok (most of the time)

cheers

positives and negitives.

i personally wouldnt do it, my main reason would be when trying to drive up a large rock face, ruts etc a shackle at the front tends to bounce the vechicle back or puch the wheel downwards. there is more chance of the shackle getting hung up and trying to bow the spring under the truck. On a good side, when the wheel drops it is foward and away from the fire wall, less chance of rubbing, like you mention the pinion stays more pointed towards the transfer and i also think that it would allow you to move the axle further foward, althou im not sure how this would work with standard steering.

Yes you are right about getting more lift.

cheers nick,

will have a bit more of a look at it and see which way will be better, lot easier to change spring mounts round, than to f**k round rotating knuckles etc. would provide more room for crossover steering too.

most of the forties that rockhop are still set up as front shackle from what i can tell by reading the mags etc.

someone needs to get some sort of event like that happening in the west. bit far to drive to sydney etc, to go look at 4wd events.

cheers

I think that you'll find that not to be the case usually. Most have dont the shackle reversal for comp work.
