Where to buy a track bar for SPOA?

Hi all

I have a 91 SWB ZOOK 1.6efi and its spring over with air lockers but people have been telling me that I need a track bar on the rear diff.

Why do you need a track bar at all?
Can you buy them off the self in sydney anywhere?
Can anyone make one?

only need 1 if ya having problems with ur diff wraping, meaning ur pinion is doing funky stuff under load or accelaration, i had a spring over zook on yjs with 1.6, air lockers and simexes, never ran 1 and had good flex, you do have to play with ur rear spring packs by adding or removing leaves depending what ya want to do, if its set up right you shouldnt need one.

you'd know if you had spring wrap! haha on acceleration particularly in 1st and 2nd on road you get a mega shudder and noise from the rear driveshaft, and your springs go S shaped... basically its the weight of the tyres forcing the leaves to twist before the tyres turn, eventually the driveshaft or leaves stop the wrapping and you take off, all the while bending the leaves and probably destroying your uni joints =) hehe

mines trac barred using the "oztraks" style setup as im only running 3 leaves in my packs (very soft). Others have had success with "over the diff" style setups with a pivot at the diff, slip joint in the middle and shackle at the front. Plenty of threads on them in both general 4x4 tech and in this section - try a search for:
- Trac Bar
- Wrap Bar
- Spring Wrap
- Axle Wrap
etc

Mine does that... The shudder and noise...However its all stock... I thought it was just the mounts on the way out...

That is great what you have done.

So really the trac bar is preventing the diff from twisting or moving forward, thus stopping the springs from being put under pressure

Do you need some kind if rubber or grease inside the bigger pipe to stop the smaller one from ratteling or even popping out?

Chose this style as it doesnt bind up and i had no room above the diff for anything really.

I've since taken off the bottom mounting hole on the front end, and i'm yet to hit them on anything =)

The bar on Alien's also solves the problem of the trac bar ripping a big hole in the diff housing.

The hole in the housing issue is something that Jimbo might want to think about. The best solution is to spread the load of the trac bar brackets over as large an area as possible (ie wrap the bracket around the housing).

I dont think I have that problem its not a zook diff Im running 80 diffs

In my personal, unqualified, non professional opinion, I feel you are better off having stiffer springs in the rear and softer ones up front.
Mine flexes well enough in the rear anyway, but coupled with the softer front it goes pretty well.
The advantage is no axle wrap to speak of.
The disadvantages are that it does limit flex a bit, and it rides like...um...something that doesn't ride very well.

Yeah i thought that too - but theres no weight in the back and there is a lot up front - so the same leaf front and back does still make the front softer as its got more weight to create flex.

im going to disagre with you.

ive just put a trac bar into my zook, it usto have a 5spring pack and was very harsh and bumpy.
when i fited the trac bar i took out a leaf. its now rides alot better and its alot nicer to drive.
flex? still hit the bump stops with the trac bar and havent loset any drop, i gained some :finger: (opened up the spring clamps)
now just need some longer rear shocks to get the most from the rear :cool:

You can't have too many grease nipples :lol:
I think you will still rip that off the diff housing, all the extra steel you have put in is not going to resist the (massive) rotational forces that the trac bar will exert, I don't know if you have transfer or diff gears fitted but your tyres look about 32"/33" that on its own will multiply the force a shyte load (tech term :) )even more if you have repowered, same goes for the front, I don't believe the factory folded metal x member is up to the job, admittedly it is a sliding and twisting style bar so the forces will be way less than a shackle and it has 2 feet of leverage on its side so you may be all right with the front.

The bar makes it launch well doesn't it? :lol:
