Outer Limits 4x4 Board

hey all, my 86 lux, 2.4 lt diesel, the dash lights stay on for a minute after start up then go out, i thought it was the external voltage regulator causing this so i replaced it and its still happening. lux runs fine, and seems normal to me
is it the alternator?? any ideas
its just annoying

have you checked the charge rate? whats the voltage when the lights are on? if you give it some revs do the lights go out?

When you say "dash lights" - is that all of them, or some of them?

Is one of them the "charge" light?

have you checked all your fuses? notice anything funny when it first started happening? anything fitted or played with? a list of which lights come on would be helpful and which ones go out straight away when you start it

unsure what the volts are, when i start the engine, all lights come on, then the oil light goes out, but the charge, tbelt and filter lights stay on, give it a few revs, and they go dim then out, but back on again when idling, give it about 30 secs, and a few revs, the lights go out and off i go.
it seems to run fine, and no i havent fitted anything

anyone have any ideas?? its bloody annoying

I think you need to measure some voltages... you'll need a multimeter and a cheap one will do.

You may just have some grounding or poor connection issues rather than an alternator or regulator that's acutally faulty. But basically you need to check voltage levels to track this down now imho.

I think you are probably right to be looking at the regulator as a prime suspect but I wouldn't say it's definite.

when the old one was in, if i tap the top of the voltage reg cover(in engine bay) the lights go out and everythings good til i turn engine off, so im fairly sure thats part of the problem

Speculation won't repair it. Proper diagnosis will lead to a repair, however. Unless you get the meter on it, you'll never know.
