Outer Limits 4x4 Board

ok so i just had a fight with the search colum. Im in the market for a patrol. This car will be my gf daily driver and for touring. Just wondering what to get thats reliable. Missus wants a turbo 4cyl. Are these things anygood?. Got about 25-30 to spend.
Any help would b appreciated

Theres not much different between a GQ & GU. Just that the GU is younger and will have less KM's on it.
The interiors are a similar size and the running gear is basically the same.
Best upgrade on a GU is a slightly more modern look both inside and out. And slightly less rattles.

The ZD30 turbo has been plagued with problems. That no one has confirmed if it was ever fixed properly. The Common Rail engine they are fitting now apparently dosent have the earlier issue.
But its the only Diesel in the Patrol range you can get an auto for. As if I was going for a smaller engine in a big car the autos appear to work much better. My brothers GU2 with ZD30 is abit jerky with the 5spd.

The engine of choice would have to be the 4.2lt turbo diesel. As you cant kill it with a stick (and a big one at that). They seem to outlast the rest of the car most of the time.

But depending on how many KM's you plan on doing. The TB45 GU can be brought alot cheaper than the Diesels. And it does take alot of KM's to spend that extra 8G in fuel. Especially when most of the time petrol is cheaper than diesel.

Yep need wagon and patrols are alot cheaper than the 100 she wants. We are selling her barina as we are goin to be getting away alot more and the lux isnt the most comftable car to travel in. They arnt that bad on fuel are they? If we were to get the td4 cyl the regos the same$. Need something we can take to cape next year

Your planned uses are not really screaming out "Patrol" to me, personally. They can be a bit of a dog for daily driving, not terrible but a definite compromise compared to something slightly smaller.

The missus wheels a v6 rav 200 killa wasps , loves it does what we need for a daily driver , and have a cheap patrol to punnish on the weekend . We tried her driving a newer patrol but she kept whinging about parking it and driving it in the city .
If she's got a barina she won't like parking the patrol .

Yep I drive a gu td42 everyday and they aren't the best around town, doesn't bother me too much but would give my missus the shits for sure.

we are just looking at buying another 4x4 for camping trips and touring to cape, hoping next year, just want something reliable as we will be keeping car for a while. patrol just came to mind because of price and reliability. the only reson we are getting another car is she doesnt like doing long trips in my hotti 1988 hilux. she will only go to work in it and to do shopping once or twice a week i will drive on weekends and trips away. also dont really want a ifs car

Paj. Excellent 4WD for wives imho. With 99% of women the whinging about parking will never stop with a Patrol.

almost exactly the same. driving anything else doesnt doesnt cut it im afriad. although a big gu patrol isnt the ideal choice for a female to daily drive.
mayby and ive already got my flame suit on, but sell the lux and keep her in the beep beep for a while longer then upgrade your car to a patrol. im sure you would enjoy driving a nissan to work than a hilux.
that way there is a fair compromise then.
but yes if your only planning on touring and stuff an ifs truck would be fine. they mainly arnt as good at rock hoping as a live axle but for the touring seen and light to medium 4wding should cope more than fine.

they have the worst turning circle known to man. Just wait till you get into a tight car park even you'll get the sh*ts even the long bonnet screws you up. Its not a shopping trolley anyway

Don't waste your time - just go for the TD42T. You wont look back.

what you save on rego with a zd30 you will be spending again to keep an eye on the lil bugger. ie exhaust temp guages, dawes valve, egr change.......

But we dont have to go down that track because the td42t is an option

So now its just a matter of finding one at the right price. Shes not the most patient chick around

stuff the TD42... you can pick up a neat GU petrol 4500 for like 13G... look on this site or other specific forums and you'll get one...
A TD42 GU is 30G.... and they get about 14L/100 on a great day... and my 4500 GU does 16L/100

That means that at the current economic climate it would take you approx 6538L on top of the fuel the TD42 would normally use to get your money back........... all leading to my point that you may as well drive the gas gussler... the 4.5 goes ok and you can get fuel in 200km incriments between here and the cape.... stock GU comes with two tanks for atleast 700km cruise range...

I know I'm about to get smoked but that's what I'd do...... hell it's what I just did!

And that was all highway.... but so's the 14L/100 out of the TD42 I had before it..... pretty confident about the 16 because I did it last week when I was testing it out between Rockhampton to Emerald...

If you want to go 20L/100 do it... outcomes still the same... can't justify the extra 17G...


but should also mention that my wife is flat out getting 25L/100 out of it....... Alot depends on the throttle position....

How much do you think those figures will change when the vehicle goes to a full Grey-Nomad Spec tourer (ie plus 500-600kg)???

I know my fuel consumption hardly changes.

when stepping from a hilux to a patrol, it will be like stepping from her berina to a falcon or commodoor.
As for turning circle of a partol, i find it better than my 91 hilux and about 1/2 that of the new cruser ute.
I would steer well clear of a 3l and bite the bullet and either go for a td42t or 4.5/4.8 petrol on gas. The only problem with this, water puts teh flame out. I had to pull out one of my mates the other day when he poked the nose into a water hole that was a little deep.
If you sell the hilux, you will miss lots of things about it but the patrol will be far better for touring.

My last missus bought a mitsubishi verada, cheap, for her drive car.
comfy, all the mods cons....etc etc

But after i got the first patrol.... which was going to be too big for her to drive etc etc... all it took was one drive - then i was driving the verada to work.

She absolutely loved driving the truck every where.

I have a new girl and a new patrol now - this one also loves driving my truck (we have a lexus for her to drive daily) but does struggle a bit to park it. She is not a super confident driver, and works in the middle of newcastle, where the parking is pretty limited.

Coxy I'll let you know soon as I bought it to tow around my Wrangler on a trailer...
I'm sure it will go up a bit... once again for me I couldn't see that I'd catch up the 17G in my 4-5 years of ownership...

The other thing that doesn't relate to here in any way shape or form is that I am going to turbo my petrol and try to tweak it for a little more economy...
We recently converted a GQ 4.2 Petty to a EFI GT30 roller bearing with a wolf 3D computer. Just took it to Fraser Island touring for a week and it went 15L/100 and I towed my race silvia to the drags with it a little while ago and it was getting 20l/100 sitting on 110km/h and passing trucks as required - It's the black turbo shorty that was running at May Day Cruiser Mnt with Offroad Cartel stickers up the side... goes good too...

Anyway price and the turbo petty 4.5 option is why I purchased mine...
