Tb48 engine and gearbox info

Just got myself a tb48 engine and 5 speed gearbox. Got a few weeks to go before my credit card has recovered and can start putting it in my patrol Gq. I'm planning on manulising the gearbox using the kit from Wholesale Automatic Gearboxs. Is there anything else recommed to do to the gearbox ? Would rather do things now before fitting. Probally run an after market ecu too. Looking at Wolf v500 any reason this is a bad choice or why any other ecu would be a better option ? Is there anything worth looking at on the tb48 before fitting, recommended mods etc.
Any input would be great, Feral

Ferral, you pull the RB30ET out did you?

Sounds like a promising conversion with the 4.8, suss out keeping the standard ecu if you still have it, you got to weigh up whether its worth the expense upgrading particulary if you are keeping it nat asp chasing just a few kw out of standard injectors and near perfect ignition maps.

I miss my turboed RB patrol, (totaly useless as a low range crawler) but fun on the freeway. Keep a post running on your conversion as its always interesting to see what blokes are putting their poor GQ's through.

Almost unavoidable the use an aftermarket ecu as the NATTS security system is tied into the engine'ecu and the engine's ecu recieves it's speed signal input from the speedo cluster Via a CANBUS data circurt meaning you need to run the engine ecu with the speedo and the trans ecu and the NATTS all together or it wont play ball ;)

Like oozuk said way to much F*#king about to run the standard ecu and the auto box. Will try and post as much info as i can about the swap to make it easyer anyone else trying the same. Latest dicovery the throttle body is electronically and throttle cable controlled. Which means the throttle cable turns the pulley then the elctronic gubbins control the butterfly. Think it will be too much f*#king around to get an after market computer to control this lot. Will run a different throttle body assembly and ditch the standard one. Theres a butterfly valve in the inlet manifold too the seperates it into two halves. I'm assuming this is for some kind of low and high rev boost.

In this picture you can see the butterfly valve in the inlet manifold, this seperates cylinders 1,2 and 3 from 4,5 and 6. There is an air activator just outside the manifold. This in turn is controled by a solinoid in a blur to the right. Not sure how much differance this will make will probally require some experimenting on the dyno.

Heres a picture of the throttle body and the Y section of the manifold theres a blue plug and another one out of view. If the throttle cable pulley is manually turned then the butterfly only turns a little. I'm assuming the rest of the butterfly movement is control electronically. Not sure what size butterfly valve would be best. Weather to stick to a standard size or go bigger, not sure if a bigger throttle body would effect the low down power.

The engine came with no coils to. Any ideas on where i could get something suitable ?

Are you going to run LPG.? I would fit an Autronic and 3 double ended Bosch coils, but they are not cheap.

I have seen issues running LPG and waste spark ignition system, but that was on a boosted engine.
Personally if i was gonna run any coils it would be LS1. They are capable of 90KV, have a built in ignitor, and are pretty cheap 2nd hand (about $150-200 for 8)

As for the wolf v500 I have heard they are a bit complex to setup (software wise). I would look at the EMS products aswell, seem to be a good unit. However the best idea is before you buy one, decide who you are going to get to tune it, and see what systems they reguarly tune and recommend.

Autronics would be nice alas they come with a nice price tag. If I was spending that much think I would go with Motec. No plans to run LPG.
I was looking at the Ls1 coils could be a good option. Would need to get a spark plug cap that seals itself in. The holes to the spark plug are vey long and thin, if not sealed 100% water could very easily become a problem down there.
Will have a look at Ems too is there anybody on the coast that can tune them ?

Not sure who would be best to tune it on the coast, chapmans in cooroy do them, have heard good and bad stories about there tuning. I know they recommend EMS.
