Hi All.

I am looking at converting my 97 Petrol 80 Series to a Turbo Diesel?

Is there much involved and who in Brisbane is best to do this?

sell yours and get a diesel version, diesel conversions are not cheap especially if you get someone else to do it...

Put an Ls1 in it. It'll be cheaper in parts and alot more fun. Fuel economy is apparently pretty good too but I haven't finished my conversion yet.

I Have done some research.

The Cost of the Full conversion kit from Mark's Adaptor's is around $6'500 plus shipping to Brisbane.
(Not including the price of the Engine, For arguements sake $3k?)
Then the labour etc... So could be around $12k??

I got a price for a 1HDT Fitted for $8K Max Drive away.

How Does this all weigh up?

put it this way,

1hdt 7K
conversion kit you have mentioned 6.5K
labour (quick guess) 5K

and be aware that the 1hdt might not come complete, ie, if its got no injectors add 2K and so on... you also want to give the engine a major service, timing belt, seals, etc.

another option is to strip down an auction wreck.

How much will you burn selling your existing cruiser and buying a diesel?

I have spent a ton of money on the old girl now and it's pretty well set up for what we do. I don't really want to sell it. I think i would have to get the broken engine fixed before i could look at sell it for a half decent amount....

in this case, if you have been happy with the 4.5, why not just rebuild what you already got?

Its starting to look that way mate.
The 4.5ltr is just so heavy on fuel.
I have put a Haltech interceptor piggy back computer on it to try and sort the fuel issue (may have made 5% more economical)

Just trying to look for a bit more power..

For the cost of a conversion you could save a lot of dollars for fuel....

Might be stating the obvious but some pro's for a refresh of the 1FZ
- Cheaper than a 1HD conversion
- Quicker turn around to have you back out and driving
- Service a 1FZ half as regularly as 1Hd so less servicing costs
- Petrol is cheaper than diesel (in bris anyway)
- No turbo to worry about, blowing up, needing to be rebuilt etc which is $$
- No injector pump to worry about needed to be rebuilt at some stage $$
- Filters etc are all cheaper for 1FZ than 1HD

just my 2 cents

So far I've got my Ls1 bolted in to the cruiser. I sold all my old motor in parts to recoup the cost and the conversion has cost me $2300 of my savings so far including Marks adapters and the Ls1 engine cost. Still have to hook up fuel pumps, wiring and exhaust but by the end of it I reckon it'd have cost me $7g all up. Trick is to buy the minimum stuff from marks adapters as they seem to double the price of everything they sell.

dont waste the money on a 1hdt a 1hdfte is bugger all more money and is lots better.

i did mine and will have the cost paid off within 2 years worth of fuel bills, plus i now have a low k motor and the cars worth heaps more . it also drives better and goes quicker than it did with the 1fz.
