knock knock evil noises.

Yesterday after a weekend away in healsville my car a coily sierra started making an evil knocking sound coming from the engine. it seems to have got progressively louder although i might be imagining. anyway I ajusted the tappets today and the noise is still there. My dad who has had experience rebuilding engines thinks perhaps one of the bearings on the crankshaft has gone. Does anyone have any ideas of what else it might be? Its definetly coming from the engine and not the carby! seems to be low in the engine.
If it is the worst case senario and the engine needs a full rebuild I was wondering what people might know about the cost of something like this. I have a warranty that covers the engine up to $750 so basicly if its going to cost more then $1000 dollars to get someone else to do it, then Ill do it myself.
Any help much appreciated
Sam

Maybe big end bearing. Maybe loose conrod bolt. Maybe piston damage as discussed above.
Need to take the sump off for a wee look I think

And the winner is nelligen, it was the piston skirt. about 1 third of it broken off. Somehow mannaged to pull a bit of oil ring with it. Im gonna replace the engine as it would be time for either that or a reco now anyway. its done a hard 170,000 kms. hopefully Ill have her running again by this time next week.
Cheers

is the bore damaged ?? if not =new pistons fitted to your rods, big end bearings, gaskets, all well under $300 if you get the right deal. and it should keep on going for years

got quotred 175 for gaskets alone, bearing $90 asspemby $80 per piston not that much difference in the end for the engine swap

Really , well I did good , I paid $170 for a set of pistons fitted to my rods, head & sump gasket, he only wanted about $35-$40 for big end bearings but I reused the originals as I only had 63,000 ks up when the piston broke, I was surprized when the guy (a mate ) said $170 all up , I asked him how much would that normally cost ,he said about $230. Well I guess I better drop him off a case or 2 of his favorite beer and keep in good with him
sounds like he didn't charge me labour for fitting the pistons onto the rods. Bad luck about your bore damage .

I think the place i went to was on the expensive side, I just got my fly wheel machined to fit a new clutch, was talking about rangies and they do work for ulr. top dollar stuff I reckon, anyway getiing a g13b out of a 94 swift. apparantly thats before the piston problems started, the guy at suzu world wasnt at all surprised about the pistons, reckons some have broken as early as 40,000kms you were right about the bad batch.
