what exactly does a torque rod do
as the title says, 1986 lux, torque rod, what is its job?? i know its a part of the suspension, coming from front diff housing to chassis, ive just done the timing belt, so ive had the front of the engine bay empty, while i was in there, i noticed a crack in the welds around where the bracket where its on the chassis, its probably a bad thing, and im planning on getting it looked at tomorrow.
is it just fixed by welding it up or is it a major job??
the crack is at the top and a smaller crack at the bottom.

is it an ifs truck?? i may be wrong with what i am thinking, as i am not that femiliar with them, and if it is what i think it is, (th rod that acts as the spring) my mate had a ifs pathfinder, that he had wound the front up to get some lift, but then had no give in his suspension and kept bending things...
maybe if i am on the right track and that is what your talking about, if you have wound it up, that could be your problem, that there isnt enough travle with the rod, and its putting to much stress on the mounts?? and after fixing it all you have to do is un wind it to a better tension...

It's to stop the diff rolling back and forth when the steering box pushs on the J arm.
Is your truck lifted?, if it is and you don't have an adj torque rod the cracks are from the rod limiting the suspension and therefore more load being put on the mounts, in saying that they crack eventually usually anyway.
Just clean the steel up and re weld it.

just a guess as never done one, but do it by taking it off, having the truck sitting on a level surface and loaded as it would normally be, then measuring the distance between axle and chassis brackets and adjusting accordingly. If it's the part i'm thinking of then it doesn't bear any load from the suspension. I've got adjustable control arms but they were pretty easy to calculate using good old pythagoras' therom.
i was told the best way to fit the adjustable torque rod was to: have vehicle sitting level on flat ground as it normally would, and just bolt one end in, then adjust the other end and bolt it in.
the rod ive ordered from superior engineering has left and right thread so you can adjust it while its on the car.
so im assuming that if yours has adjustment on 1 end, then youd probably have to take it off at that end.
