Hey all. Don't want to open up a pandoras box of debate, but I'm looking to turbo my 100.
Its my first diesel and first turbo so I'm looking for some informed advice. I want to do it right the first time and yes, I am doing all the search things.
So any tips on the best way to go would be greatly appreciated. I'm on the sunny Gold Coast so local would be good. Cheers... M...

There are a few questions you need to ask yourself before looking for a turbo as well.
What sort of driving do you do?
Are you going intercooled? What sort of intercooler (water/air or air/air)
If so, top or front mount?
What sort of power gain you after?

I had a DTS turbo intercooled setup in my 80. Running top mount air to air
intercooler at 16psi.
Get setup for me, strong power, ran cool, off road was also great.

Sorry to answer your question with a question,

Dan

Cheers Chucky..Want to do it right the first time so yes to the intercooler. Do city and highway driving and a fair bit offroad. Weighing in at 3 ton so I need a bit of a boost. Hearing of upto 50% power gains... Sounds good..?..

As with most things, power gains depends on dollars spent, and finding the right bloke to do it.
My 80 ran a top mount intercooler which was a good choice for me.
Highway speeds got the benifit of the cold air, If I staked the rad (which I did once) I only had to worry about repairing it, not the I/C as well if it had of been front mounted. (Similar draw back for the water/air but these really are a better I/C I think)
The only issue is heat soak at low speed worked hard. But as I had transfer gears and F&R air lockers, lack of power was never a problem I ever had to deal with.

To put it into perspective, I now drive a 60 with NA 6.5l V8 chev in it. Down low the 60 shits over the 80, but anything over about 80k/hr, and the 80 would have walked the 60 no worries.

Go for it. I just strapped a turbo on my 80 series 1HZ and am very pleased. It's an AXT / Garret kit with aneroide. It had only done 140 k so still pretty fresh. I have no intercooler so the boost was kept quite low ( around 9 psi ) to keep exhaust temps down.

They told me 50% power gain and I reckon that's what I got. I haven't done the dyno yet but to drive it is has heaps of grunt. The torque gain is impressive. I don't drive like a loony so reliability shouldn't be altered. The main purpose of the turbo is for towing.

I have calculated an increase of .5 litres per 100 k's. Around town it's great. The power comes on low and smooth. On the highway when you want to pass you just stick the thong in and your back on the right side of the road in no time.

Get an intercooler but don't go nuts with boost so reliability isn't compromised.

My 2 bob.

Dan.
