just been 4wding and on the way home i noticed a rumbling noise under acceleration around 60km/ph ...i unlocked the hubs but is still making the noise ...what could it be?

Lock the hubs back in and take a short drive to see if it changes at all!

then unlock and try again.

Could be unis on the rear shaft??

it is the same whether locked in or not... everything looks hunky dory...it sounds like large muddie tire noise ...however i dont have chunky tires

Rumbling sound at speed could be wheel bearings or a dud tyre (seperation). Run your hands around the tyre treads and see if you can feel a lumpy spot.

ill have to check it out...its slightly unnerving when there is a new noise.

could be mud or debris hanging around moving parts (wheels/shafts)... could also be a busted tcase or engine mount and its noisy when you get the frequency of vibrations right.

the mud is clear of the wheels and shafts...i did have a metal vibration noise on heavy deceleration but that has gone...ill put it on the hoist and check it out.

centre bearing shagged?? get under and check rear driveshaft for play, at rear pinion, centre bearing and transfer case. ive heard that if the centre bearing is stuffed, it can damage transfer case and rear pinion

iv just cleaned and had a quick squizz underneath...the center bearing looks normal...haven't yet checked for play...unis look normal... im pretty sure its in the diff.... another question...what would cause a starter motor to start sometimes and not others?

The mack i was driving did a similiar thing, after 4 hrs of mack looking at it, the diagnosed a clutch on its way out, Nursed it back only to totally destroy a rear diff and clock up a repair bill in excess of 5k. Boss aint too happy

loose connections. check your battery and make sure your connections are tight. and check the wiring to either battery or starter motor isnt frayed or very dirty.

basically playing bog holes will stuff pretty much anything. If anything is even halfway worn or loose the boghole will stuff it. Maybe think about not playing in bogholes and nearly all your problems will be gone.

I also think it is your pinion bearing. Mine does the same.

That is soo funny!! i think exactly the same!! If you look at a bog hole and know that you can drive through it then drive around it!! you have nothing to prove and it will just COST YOU MONEY... The deeper the Bog hole the More it will cost you..

I know this from allot of billls and experience. The young guys struggle with this concept and tht is fine, but they soon see my point when the bill s start piling up.

Some of my list for bog holes include
2 x Alternator
1 x Water Pump
1 x Starter Motor,
2 x Aircon compressor
1 x Radiator
Stripped the inside 4 times for flood of mud

etc etc etc

The smile will last a minute the frown will last a week and the expense will last forever.

Have fun. Be nice to your Nissan and it will be the toughest truck in the bush.

Last "boghole" I tackled killed my starter motor.

The new one was carefully "waterproofed" over 4 years ago - and I've successfully avoided bog holes ever since.

And if the track has a boghole that cannot be driven around, do you give up and go another way even though you know the rest of the track is a damn good drive, or are you bad at maintaining you vehicle, unis, et al are not all that expensive. Oh well I guess we should all become tourers :finger:

driving through a random boghole once in a while is different to just playing bogholes as your only form of 4wding which the OP sees to do.

Regardless maintenance is the key especially on a 2nd hand vehicle with unknown history and aged components.

That's why I posted, I can't see anywhere that he indicates mudholes are his favorite form of driving, has he indicated this previously?

Cheers

From another thread, consider me back on the outers side for now :D

yeah im sure ive read this thread elsewhere too, although ive posted a question in yota tech and gen tech before.
anyway, hes been given enough advice to be able to diagnose the problem correctly, and hes been told where to check, how to check and how to fix it.
im sure he could get it sorted if he wanted to, especially if hes a mech or works at a mech shop.
i agree with those that say learn to drive the lux offroad and upgrade the bits that NEED to be upgraded. i think that mud can be extremely dangerous for the driveline/electricals, but i myself am guilty of driving through bogholes, and im currently in the process of rebuilding/replacing the bits that dont like the mud.
all i can say is that mud is part of 4wdriving, whether you choose to drive through it or not is entirely up to you. just give the driveline a wash with a gerni after playing in the stuff.
personally i think that mud can be fun, just like ruts, rocks, climbs, descents and everything else that we find out on the tracks.
