Gday everyone!
Hoping you can help with some advise please. I'm not real Landcruiser savvy so hoping the group can help here....

Mate of mine just got himself a very tidy 80 series.

He's had to do a bit to of light maintenance and someone told him that its advisable to replace the big end bearings in a 1HD-T every 100,000kms...

Is this true? Should we do this? Or is he throwing away his cash by doing this...?

The thing runs sweet as and has 260,000 on the clock.... It had some major stuff done at 200,000km's but is running like a dream...

Thanks for your help

Cheers
Mike

yes they should be done every 100,000km. find out when they were last done and go from there. it is not a super expensive job, about $200 in parts and 2 - 3 hours labour.

these engines are also very fussy about their oil, they need a jap spec high calcium oil or the bearings head south quickly. suitable oils available here are Caltex Delo CXJ 15w40 (the J is for japanese) mineral oil, Castrol J-Max 15w40 mineral oil, and some amsoil synthetics. There are probably others available but they are the ones I know about. I run the Jmax because I can get it, others are hard to find.

wow

thats shocking on toyotas part IMO

my 2H is 370k's on the same engine complete, nothings been touched except a gearbox to transfer case leak which was fixed under warranty.

heck im still on the same injectors

yeah it's pretty dodgy, but toyota did come to the party and warranty a lot of them. the problem is partly due to toyota using more enviro friendly materials in the bearings, and also specing a bearing that needs high calcium oil. if the engine has had high calcium oil all its life the bearings are probably fine. the bearings in the 2H are indestructible by comparison. remember also the bearings in the 2H see MUCH smaller loads - indirect injetion and lower overall power/torque ouutput make the life of the bottom end pretty easy.

there are aftermarket bearings available for the 1HD/Z from Geoff Walsh, SMS Diesel etc, which are not so fussy about their oil.
