im 99% sure they are metric (as they are jap made) but want to double check.

I'm trying to work out what size the nut on the front output shaft is from the transfer.

not the 4 which undo the the actual drive shaft, but the staked nut which holds the flange on.

my verniers are reading 27.3mm, so at a guess 28mm but i dont find this a very good way of working it out as ive bought the wrong socket before.

any help would be great.

all metric unless someones replaced them at some point (possible on older sierras etc).

27mm socket will fit. They should be 27mm flanged nuts unless someone has previously molested them.

27 for sure.

PS there are imperial fastener on a sierra - Seatbelt bolts are imperial (actually an SAE spec), as they are in every car.
