diesel fuel treatment? is this just a waste?

i saw you can buy a $15 treatment for your diesel engine you simply empty it into your fuel tank when you fill up. it claims to clean injectors lessen smoke and stop diesel knocks.

does this stuff work or just a waste of time. the bottle said use ever second time you fill up if it were to work i would use it once every month or 2.

The redline one (read as the expensive one) seemed to work well on a 4jx1 3.0L TD in a jackaroo. Better idle, less smoke on WOT and more power (seat of pants seemed to pull better???). I think it was $35 for a bottle. Put in 1/2 a bottle for the first tank then used 1/10 of a bottle on susequent four tanks.

I use the Chemtech one occasionally and it seems to work.

For example, I drove to Sydney last week, put it in when I filled up, made it all the way in there (534k's) on the one tank, usually only dare to push it to 500k's as the needle is too low.

Wouldn't expect huge things from it, but at about $30 a bottle, using it every couple of tanks, one bottle easily lasts me a year and it seems worth it to me.

could just be the way the stars were aligned, but when i got my 61, i couldnt see out the back when accelerating. Chemtech seems to have cleared a lot of that up now, as smoke isnt even noticeable. Before that experience, i wouldnt have been able to say either way.

My Hj60 used diesel treatment all its life and did 450 thousand k's without pulling the injectors or injector pump out. (ring land let go at 450 thou :( )

That was using a CRC brand of injector treatment.

Now I run the toyota diesel treatment in my 100 series. If it works half as well as the CRC stuff did in my 60 then i will be very happy and it will be worth it.

how often do you use it? every second fuel up or just whenver? because if it costs me an extra $20 every couple of weeks or month to make my engne run smoother then i think it is well worth it in the long run.

does this stuff work the same or similar as the thread that suggests mixing 2stroke oil in with your diesel fuel to help keep things lubricated as the fuel companies have taken out some element of the diesel?

I have been running a product by Smoke Less Diesel, call FPC for 5 years. The smoke levels are minimal, even under hard acceleration, all factory settings. Power is up a little bit, probably due to better combustion. No change in cetane rating of the fuel. You add 10ml/10 liters of diesel. Its about $60/litre for the concentrate. I like it, works well for me.

I have just run out of FPC recently and bought a bottle of the Moreys fuel additive to get a comparison. This boosts the cetane level. I added the dosing amount to the tank when topping up, but its not a true test as there is now a cocktial of FPC and Moreys in the tank. I noticed the engine sounded a bit smoother and quieter , but no increase in performance re cetane increase. From memory the Moreys was $40 at Supercheap for a 1 liter bottle.

I have posted a bit on fuel treatments in the past.

Ive used the toyota diesel treatment, Nulon, chemtec with good success.
They do what they claim to do.

I use it mainly for cleaning diesel bug, and dispersing water after draining and cleaning a tank that had water contamination.

I have also used Acetone, and 2stroke with good effect too.

There are more commercial products and homebrews than you can shake a stick at, as far as fuel treatments/additives are concerned. Personally, I just use a mix of 2 stroke oil and pure, (gum), turpentine.

sounds interesting. i might try out some of these treatments as it seems they are worth while, when my net speeds up i will add in some figures and see how it goes.

I only ever use pure gum turpentine as an additive for my furniture polish.
Never heard of using it in fuel.

It's not generally something you hear of mentioned as a fuel additive. It's quite a while since I researched it, so can't remember specifics offhand, but the stuff does have some desirable qualities in areas other than just beeswax polish and use by artists. diesel power!! use a bit in every tank if i dont it blows smoke and doesnt feel like it has as much power..

I use it every tank, but a can lasts a long time, and i dont do alot of k's in my 100 as a have a company ute.
