Hey guys need some help, just bought a daihatsu rocky 1985 great little car. i was wonderin if anyone knows about the diffs in them. i want to put some diff lockers in can anyone shed some light on the story on what brand and everything i need to know about them to get them in. thanks guys

In a word, forget in, well thats actually two words.

Assuming you dont go to the trouble of changing over to something like Hilux axles, then they are near impossible to get.

Now, I didnt say they are impossible to get, just very near impossible- because-------

I used to own a F75, 1985 Rocky, and amongst other mods I had were twin Detriot lockers.

Before you get excited, Trac Tech, the manufacturers of Detriots in the States stopped manufacturing them at least 10 years ago. Yes, you may still find them listed in a parts list somewhere, but believe me, they dont have any stock left. Other will vouch for this, as many have searched, and failed.

So, of course, you are now asking yourself how did I get to have a double locked Rocky, well it scomes down to good timing, and a certain degree of luck. I bought the first one not long after buying my Rocky, about 15 years ago now, when they were still manufactured new, and got it imported from the states. The second one I fluked apon, met someone from a 4wd club one day about 10 years ago, who by a miracle, just happened to have a Rocky detriot Locker in his shed, which he wanted to get rid of. I boutght it for $350 I think.

Now, unfortunately, i have sold my old Rocky, complete with lockers and factory winch, to another member of this board, whose name shall remain anonomous. I have heard though, that he has subsiquently onsold them again.

As they were such a rare item, I used to keep track of any Detriots that I became aware of. I think there were 5 that I knew of, my 2, one in Malaysia, one in Brisbane, and one in Wandoan.

If you happen to track one down, and IF the owner will sell, and if they know what they have and how rare it is, be prepared to pay BIG money for it.

And if you think the above is BS, many others on this and other forums will back up my story.

hello thanks for that much appreciated, so really i should really be looking more so for hilux diffs, cause i can get my hands on some from a 1992 one i think or around that era, that would more so the way to go and then get lockers for a hilux because there more common? or are the still hard to get aswell? will the dif itself be an easy transfer? and are they the same gear ratios, or wont it all matter? and its more so just a plug n play sorta thing? cheers

People change entire axles over because the selection of lockers available is more widespread. I think its mainly to Hiluxes due to a similar track, plus the selection of lockers available. Someone else will give you the answer, I was lucky, I didnt have to do it.

hey ive been looking more around and i was wondering if you would know what the shaft diameter would be and how many splines are on this shaft, and what ratio it is??? thanks mate jas.

Actually, if you have a browse through the Daihatsu spare parts inventory, you may well find a for sale ad for a locked diff or 2. I am pretty sure they would be my old ones.

People change the ENTIRE rear axle to Hilux..... just in case your thinking it is just the centre ( because you asked about spline count.... )

yeh thats what im thinking, my good mate is parting his 1986 hilux, so thinkin about taking his, you reckon its a gud idea?

Well yes and no.....

If the axle ratio is the same as the Rocky front then yes if you can do the work cheap its cool - or swap both axles

However its not a small job and the cost of lockers is far more than the vehicles worth, if you have to change ratios as well - its getting expensive.

And if it matters this swap would need to be engineered to be road legal

i will have to check the ratio's but for the axles yes i would swap both front and rear.
i dont mind how big the job is, i got a big garage and i have all the time in the world, dont really mind about the cost as long as at the end of the day i get it doin what i want to do were i go + i no alot of ppl who can write roadwerthy's and mod plates so all that doesnt bother me + cops dont no fuck all round here haha cheers mate

Sounds like you've got it covered then.

If you look around you will find lots of Hilux ratios up to 5.7:1 ( although the teeth look a little too much line a fine tooth comb for my liking ) are available so you should select a ratio to suit your eventual tire diameter.

5.285:1 is as high as I would go for strength.

And replace the #$%^ lux rear brakes with something that will work whil your at it.

Should be a good unit when done.
