Oil in the Alternator Issues????

Have a few issues in the alternator and while I'm trying to suss it out I thought I'd share my progress for all those good ideas that flow round.

I had an oil leak which is coming from between the alternator and a pump on the end of it.

Pulled the alternator out and cleaned out the seal stopping the oil from going inside the pump.

There was oil inside the alternator, on the brushes which I cleaned as it could.

So now the alternator is back in the truck and the leak seems to have stopped (for now at least?)

But now the battery light on the dash is permanently on???????

Have checked the usable link by the battery, seems good on the meter.

Did I cook the alternator?

Each battery is sitting on about 12.5v while running
If I turn on the lights it drops to about 12.3v on both battery's but when I turn the lights off it goes back to 12.5v.

I thought the voltage on the battery's should be around 14v if the alternator was producing load but is there any good tests that have been tried to isolate the alternator for problems?.

Its a 91 safari 24v TD42 diesel engine.

Mate sounds like the Brushes are stuffed on the alternator and it isnt charging. you should be getting between 14.5-15V when the car is running.

That's the concern, am just trying to confirm its the alternator though, it was working before I touched it and now it doesn't,
Have just been going back through checking the wiring, maybe shorted it or forgot a plug somewhere, probably changed the angle when it was out and oil got into the wrong spot????????????????.

if the alt has an external reg, which in not to sure on. Some regs have a small glass fuse inside the cover of the reg.

So pulled it out again, checked to see if I cooked it, testing for continuity across the rotor and bits as per manual stuff, I'm thinking that when I pulled it out, as there was oil on the wrong side of the seal, when I moved it out of the engine the oil has run down onto the brushes.

If all you did was clean the internals the oil leak will most likely return
before you know it.

Over time & klms the oil impurities chew out the shaft & seal on
the vacuum pump. You will either need repair damaged shaft or replace
it/ or the unit

Think I'm gonna have to suck it up and spend some $$$, would be interesting to know if oil leaks into the alternator is that a fire risk? has anyone else found oil leaking from the back of their alternator?
