just asking for a mate who wants to put a 5 speed Gbox in his Petrol MQ with the L28 motor....

yes same box's need to swap input shaft and bell housing from old L28 box to 5sp. Then theres the drive shafts, need to make up new rear g/box mounts. Also the sticks are a lot further forward in the top of the 5 sp. Easy way is to cut out tranny tunnel up under the heater box and bend sticks to suit. I hear on the grape vine that it is possible to swap the shifters tops of the boxes. Not 100 % on that. I have done this conversion on my old shortie. Not much better on fuel but 1st gear is lower. Do a searh or look in the bible,

returns the shifter to the correct location and means the tunnel doesnt need cutting

I'm trying to remember which box i was playing with (think it may have been the two 4 speed boxes - it was some time ago) but i needed a diesel 4 speed and had a petrol one - the input shaft was different - the gear was larger on the diesel one and wouldn't fit into the petrol box - other than that the housing was the same.
Probably won't be a problem to you as you'll be (or your mate will be) going for a 5 speed, but is something to know - that not all input shafts are identical.
Just saying that as you may be likely to want to put the 4 speed input into a 5 speed, might pay to physically check first - pretty easily done.

I've stuffed around with this in the past and it can consume hours of time to get it to work correctly, the big down side is that the gear on the input shaft is usually "worn" to suit the gear in the box..... by swapping it out the gear set tends to be noiser for the inital stages of "wear in time" and does shorten the life span somewhat as a result.



simplest solution = an extended spigot bush, takes about 5 mins on the lathe
