Hey all,
am looking at doing a zook build-up as a comp/weekend toy and having my 4runner as the tow/tourer car.
The zook wasnt going to be engineered.
Have front and rear hilux diffs complete with 4.88 ratios.
Have a hilux gearbox and transfer, tailshafts, springs, brackets.
Wasnt going to be a pretty car.
Was gonna do a 3inch bodylift, buggy leaves front and rear, no shocks.
full exo roll cage.
cut the guards and run 40inch tyres.
any help would be great.
Cheers
Dan

what type of engine do you want to run?

Bolt in complete hilux running gear, including motor. Suzuki stuff breaks and you dont have to worry about diff offsets ect... if you swap trans/motor as well.

Only thing i can suggest is to still run shocks, and to post up plenty of photos of youre build

you really need to have shocks

do you need to have shocks?
what do they do for off-road?
i have ranchos and set them at 1 for rock climbing.
Okay so complete lux running gear?
i got a 3y 2.0L petty motor from a lux that i can use.
Its not a powerhouse but turns my 35s on the lux off-road easy enough.
cheers

I queried on here about buggy leaves in the front, the reply I got was too much headache for no real gain. Apparantly good in the rear though. Yes you definitely need shockies
having no damping would be undrivable. Complete Lux running gear, wouldn't you be better just re-bodying a SWB 4runner chassis or something? I dont see the need for such massive gearbox and transfer when your looking at such a piddly motor
If I was to run 40" tyres on a Sierra, I'd keep it Suzuki engine gearbox and transfer; but probably go Cruiser 60 series diffs as they will handle such big rubber a bit better than Hilux. Also because they are offset to suit the Sierra transfer arrangement. But then again I never would put such big rubber on a Sierra...

what size tyres do zooks come out with??
because 30s on zooks are big arent they?
Well it was because I can run 37s on the lux just thought shouldnt the comp truck run bigger rubber than the tow truck?
Yes I have an modified 4runner extra cab body on a single cab hilux chassis on the driveway atm but always wanted a zook for a comp/bash around the bush and not care truck.
Since 40s are a bit big, might go 38 super swamper of 37 bogger.
Cheers

You know if you rum chromo axles you can probably get away with 34-35" tyres on zook diffs which will be the equivelent clearance under the diff pumpkin to a much larger tyre on lux or similar diffs. Fact is monster tyres arnt really needed to finish high up in the rankings on the comp scene and when adding larger diffs ect... you take away what makes zooks so good, there weight advantage. I know my rig on 31"s which isnt too outragous would embarress alot of larger trucks running massive rubber.

Paying $1000+ for chromoloy cvs and axles for zook diffs to run 35inch tyres doesnt seem to make a point to me.
As I can run 35s on lux diffs and standard cvs and axles and will only cost me $50 to replace them if they broke.
cheers

Costing me about $380 for my Chromos
Hilux diffs are heavy, and big. I like Suzuki stuff because its small and light, and this works to its advantage.
A mate and myself are toying with a project ATM, and it will run LJ50 diffs which make Sierra diffs look big! But guess what, it will weight next to nothing, and have massive clearance with small tyres. and incase you think I am aiming small to keep it legal, no this will be a unregoed toy car too
Seems to me like you love your Hilux stuff though

how much more clearance on lj diffs to widetrack diffs and how bigger tire could they handle stock?

Not sure on the exact number, but somewhere around an inch. which is 2" in tyre sizes
Strength in the 50 diffs is not so great, they could probably handle a 31" tyre stock (I'm not really sure of the limit though), but dont run allot of horsepower through them (factory was a 30hp 539cc engine after all). The LJ50 diffs are not really the best things on earth for a play toy, I was just trying to make the point that bigger is not always better, but I'm just nuts
.
They are the same size centre as 1L Sierra, so 1L Sierra should give similar clearance, but parts a bucket loads easier to get and newer
. Also 1L Sierra is narrow track, LJ50 is uber narrow track

Chromo's are on special at the moment, US$240 odd a set. Almost got some for my birthday until they asked my mrs for US$280 postage...
WTF
I'd say go bigger diffs.
That said theres a zook in my garage at the moment on wt diffs/35s/cromoly cv's, but its only been around the block, so no research and development (broken stuff) as yet.

hey dad,
whens this zook gonna be out on the tracks??
A mate of mine has a black zook with a turbo swift motor and 33s on it.
I would only go lux diffs as I have a complete set with 4.88s in them on my other lux doing nothing.
Lux diffs arent that heavy, the centres are 20kg if that.
GU diffs are HEAVY, took 3 blokes to lift my neighbours front gu diff.
Can you cut the guards of zooks? was planning on doing minimal lift.
Cheers

Need gearing and trac bars before that one hits any tracks, maybe a few weeks... Depends on owners pocket.

thanks for the info, got me thinking this talk of lj's as there are 2 sitting in a paddock opposite the farm i work on that i could prolly get very cheap but think i'll stick with wt plan

lux diffs are heavy when compared to zook diffs (twice as heavy)
I did a heap of hard wheeling and a comp with 33" JT2's on standard axles and didnt have a breakage for quite some time, but when they went pop it was 3 in one go and thats with max right boot all the time.
