Airflow meter - Pajero NL 3.5 SOHC - running on LPG

Long story, but I had a bit of a backfire problem over the years. Each time, I fixed the backfire and had no problems for ages. Each backfire blew the honeycomb section out of the airflow meter, and it got badly crunched up.
I managed to panelbeat the honeycomb section roughly back into shape - usually using a 2 inch nail, but the last time saw the section so mangled that I don't think I can safely bring it back to shape.
Currently, I am running without the honeycomb, and performance and economy are unchanged, but the designers put the honeycomb there for a reason. I assume that it is to generate some turbulence for the hot wire sensor to detect airflows correctly - especially at idle or low speeds.
Questions:
Does anyone know where I can get new honeycomb mesh? It doesn't have to be cut to the exact shape - I can trim it myself.
Does anyone run their vehicles without the honeycomb, and if so, do you notice any difference in performance or economy?
Thanks in advance for your help.
