I am looking at an fj40 with a 3b with a skyline turbo on it. It has all the mod plates for it and then engine would put up less hp that the standard 2f and its a diesel so turbo is ok. All the brakes are disk brakes. But my question is it legal to have that engine in that car on p plates in QLD.

I dont know if its the same as NSW but down here turbos are allowed only in diesels for P platers.

as far as i know its not a factory turbo so its classed as a engine modification and that makes it illegal
HOWEVER you can apply for a exemption but you would need a dyno printout and also a weighbridge printout to work out its power to weight

Is it engineered?
They will ask to see the receipts and engineers report at the RTA when you apply for the exemption.
So may as well get it engineered which requires weighbridge ticket, and due to the 40 being coiled and having disc brakes.
Engineers report will set you back $1k.

From 1 July 2007, new restrictions on driving high powered vehicles were introduced for probationary licence drivers who obtained their licence from this date.
A probationary licence holder cannot drive a vehicle if it has:
* An engine of eight or more cylinders;
* a turbocharged or supercharged engine (except diesel powered vehicles. Exemptions can apply for lower performance turbo and supercharged cars);
* an engine that has been modified to increase its performance; and/or
* any of the following high performance six cylinder vehicles as published in the Government Gazette:

Well i called up qld transport and told them that it was an engine transplant and that the engine was a turbo diesel and was probably less hp than the original. He said if it has less hp and its not turbo petrol or v8 then it is ok to drive. The car has mod plates for everything so i guess it looks ok then!
