think my motor went kablamo

hmm, ok motor is a TD42 - GQ, well it started off by getting hot, then hotter, after running out of water to put in it (kept going 100degrees plus on the temp) we got to the point where we had to get it out on a straight rd to get some air flowing thru the radiator - thinking this would cool it down as we'd got it to sit at a steady 100degrees solid.

after all this - heating up boiling then waiting to cool down and driving a bit more, it started burning oil (blue smoke from the breather) so it sat turned off long enough to get to 90 degrees, we got out onto an open road and started heading for first available water, temp went sky high, and within 5 mins it shut down,

stayed here for around a hour topping up the water and letting the whole thing cool thinking it was seized, but it started, runs as if its on 5 cylinders and chugging loads of smoke from the breather now, and white/blue smoke out the exhaust, not happy jan, no knocks or bangs tho just running rough

got it home but it's dumped bout a letre of oil out the breather, and was smoking in rythm with the miss fire,

my question is - the oil's still black so no water/diesel in the sump, but i got oil out between the head and the block, and oil pouring out the breather on the rocker cover,

am i up for a full on rebuild or would it be safe to assume its just a head off top end rebuild??

sorry for the long post but been drowning my sorrows a bit

to be honest , if your going to drive it without water then you expect to do a full rebuild , and thats if the head and block isnt warped

I'd say your fukt.

I'd remove the head and see.... then you will know.

Id say if your 100% lucky and your head and block arnt warped, then at the very least your piston rings and bores are going to be fuked and you should also be checking your main bearings for wear as well.

either way if your not capable of doing the work yourself, i think you just wrote off you 4wd cause a cheep rebuild is gonna cost you between 6-10K

i am also curious as to where you got your temp reading from , cause without water it isnt reading water temp and by the sounds of it you were vapourizing oil , i recon your motor would have been hitting over 200 deg

sorry to sound harsh

I'd say you have hurt her pretty bad, it's not sounding good. Start saving for a rebuild or replacement motor.

pumping oil out the breather and smokey exaust nd running rough sounds lot like you have done a piston either cracked a piston or big bore damage or torn a ring off. id be looking for another engine. running that hot would most likely as said previously warped everything.

Dude!! hate to say but she F%$Ked!

brothers wife did same thing while back and when I stripped it I found heaps of sh%t destroyed from a cook up.

1st the liners pick up and then the metal goes through the bearings then they collapse then the rods go soon after.
Block and head will have warped from prolonged heat.

injection pump should be ok...there's a bit of cash in those for ya deposit on a new crate motor - as Bogged said........its your best bet.

thanks for the replies and yea i thought it'd be game over, i know its a bad move to drive it when its outta water and vapourising the oil but it got to the point where its sorta "the damage is already done" sorta mood lol, but on a good note. found a wrecker that does exchange motor's for 3500.. not too bad me thinks

expensive weekend but shit happens i guess -
at least it drove home without bein towed

will start removal of the old melted motor on the weekend

The title should be f*#k your motor being stupid 101 . that $100 tow truck ride would be looking pretty good about now.

more than 100 and less than 3.5K
the damage would not have been done until it ran out of water.
and from your talk of open roads, id say you could have got a tow from there, but its all too late now, just hope someone else reads this and thinks twice before lunching a motor...

Similar thing just happened to me over Christmas - 100% full rebuild required including sleeves & pistons. The blue smoke is caused by cylinder scoring and piston deformation resulting in improper piston to sleeve sealing.

yea all sorted found a good price exchange motor
mine was old n tired, and bout due to have something fail anyways lol
and as for open road, i was more meaning straight track thats not low range territory, was aiming for some air cooling thru the radiator b4 it ran out of water,
once out of water as you say, the damage is already done- the original question was would i be lucky enough for just top end.. b4 i went and got me an exchange
i believe the q was not how why when what if i did something different, if u were there i'd be glad to hear ur advice but you werent, and believe me we tried - even used coke bottles and creek water lol

no phone signal no contact and the remaining cars that were with us were too far ahead and didnt know we'd had the zero water dilemma..
anyways its happened now, doesnt matter now i got me a shiney new black motor to bolt in

and hayden, im still kickin myself for sellin that 5.0L lol it went too quick woulda been puuuuuuurfect but o well.. turbo diesel's are bomb proof :D
(just not 3 litres tee hee)

i got a TD42 goin cheap if you get in quick.. runs quiet, great on fuel, you can barely even hear it running... in fact some people say it doesnt even run... :? sucks to hear bout so many 3Ls going tho, and 4.2 GU's are hard to find compared to the GU grenades..

thats true, shame your group left you stranded.

and yes, the motor will be totally fucked, minimum will be bearings, piston sleeves, pistons, and top end. plus whatever is warped.

yea i know.. there were a few sorry's goin round lol.. pretty sure most thought - they'll be right, prolly just playin round on somethin tricky- lol then we came out all smokey and not happy bout a hour later.. considered walkin out but yea... damage is already done may as well get it home b4 it stops..

it sucks.. but it happens i guess lol, just had to be a sunday

If it was me in your position, at the first sign of not being able to keep water in it (for whatever reason) - i would have pulled over and called it a day. If the rest of your crew were out of sight or out of radio contact, then maybe they need to be schooled in basic 4x4 etiquette/safety.

I'd sooner be towed out by a Toyota than have to fork out for a new motor!! :D

Also, i think that you're out of luck with just a top end rebuild - i'd be surprised if you haven't scored or damaged your crankj bearings and rod big/little end bearings.

yea was just idea hunting,, thought maybe i'd be able to just do top end, but have sourced an exchange motor so its all good..

n yea we originally thought it was a leak from the bottom rad hose, so it was repaired and topped up but from then on it wouldnt come down, and that was on the way out lol

agreed on the etiquette tho- would have saved lots having another car nearby cause as you say, even after it bein hot.. a tow out and maybe a winch here n there probably coulda have saved a bit. not all but a bit of the damage, but hey as i said its no biggie, i was planning a rebuild soon anyways as it was an old tired motor, now its just deceased lol.

all good should have my newie on sat.. and the next few weekends i know what ill be doin

gonna need to refill the beer fridge

mate sounds like it will have grabbed a piston if your looking for some one to rebuild it for you ill do the job i am a qualified mechanic of 12 years and love doing these sort of jobs i am doing my own at the moment my rebuild kit cost 1300 but you would also have to get head and everything else checked
