I'm thinking it's the axle seal. the car is a 92 ln106 lux, just wondering how hard this seal is to change? or if anyone out there has any other ideas as to what's leaking. it's coming out of the centre of the wheel

thanks all

is the brake drum full of oil?

sounds like the axle seal ,you will probably find the wheel bearing is stuffed.
when the wheel bearing goes the axle flops around like a kock in a sock
this lets oil by pass the seal because it is not held central then pushes on the seal lip unevenly
normally the seal gets trashed as well

either way its an axle out jobby

Yeah sounds like an axle seal.

Here's a good write up on how to go about it:

thanks for that. makes sense and that wheel bearing didn't sound too healthy a while ago so it's time for a service. new seal, new bearing sounds the go. are the rear bearings hard to change? done my fronts a couple weeks ago but I hear rears are very different..

bearings are a sealed press on type with a retaining ring that is pressed on
this needs to be removed that's the hardest bit .
some big hammers bits of pipe and a press come in handy

this'll be fun. no "big" hammers. no press and I'll have to sort something out for a bar.

priced up a kit with the bearing, retaining clip, o ring and inner and outer axle seals and sounds like that'll be what I'll be doing today.

thanks for the link, it'll come in handy and thanks all for the help

I've done my bearings on my rn105, and had some trouble getting that retaining ring off, if you don't have the gear, take it to an engineering place or mechanic, but if u are set on doing it yourself, I ground donw 2 sides of the ring till it was paper thin ro the axle, and it dropped off, but u also gotta got the new one without damaging it as the seal runs on it. good luck

thats what the piece of pipe is for
u put it over the axle shaft and use it as a slide hammer

I don't know about hilux's but on my landcruiser full floater i was continually getting oil in the bearings. After taking in the housings i found that they were bent 5/8's an inch out of true in the rear and 1/4 inch in the front. should fix it.

thanks all.. changed it last weekend and the drum was full of oil. beat the axle on a bit of wood real hard to get that retaining ring off (didn't want to damage the axle.. read that if you Nick the axle at all you weaken it substantially..) "found" a suitable pole to use to smack the new one on and presto!! nice and easy! but I haven't felt enticed enough to do the other side yet :p.. getting that ring off was a biatch..

anyhoo thanks all for your input. much appreciated :)
