Patrol swivel hub bearings

I have to replace the swivel hub bearings on my Patrol and I was wondering what is the easiest way to remove the old outer race without removing the whole hub. Or is it easier to remove the whole hub and be done with it?

I removed the lot when I did the seals on mine, cleaned the whole lot and gave it a grease and check up..
worth it, filthy shit job, but worth it

If its like a GQ, there are a couple of plugs just above the bearing races that need removing. Then you can drive out the races with a drift. But i can imagine how you would do it without removing everything... Its hard to not destroy the plugs when driing them out as well...

It is exactly the same as a GQ, I'll have to have a look for the plugs...

Only way is to pull it all apart. Might as well replace the inner axle seal while it's apart.

Whe I have it all appart can I just drive the old outer races out from inside the knuckle or through the other bearing hole with a drift?

easiest to knock it out from the other side.

So down throught the top of the axle to knock the bottom race out and vise versa for the top?

When i did mine a couple of months ago Dave, i was able to carefully drive out the sealing plugs that sit just above the bearing races with a drift from the bearing side. The plugs were slightly dented but were able to be re-used (at 11pm at night Y.V Nissan arent open:) ) Once this is done, you can then drive out the races inside- to- out with a drift..
I used a drift the same size as the tapered end of the bearing race to minimize damage to the plug..

Thanks Nick, so the plug sits at the bottom of the outer bearing race? ie when I pull the cap off with the bearing on it, then look into the knuckle I'll see the plug. Pretty sure I understand now
I'll also have another squiz in my workshop manual, just to make sure.

Yep thats it Dave--when you remove the cap with bearing attached and look into the swivel housing itself, at the bottom of the bearing race, there will be a plug. Its there to stop leakage through the bearing cap...
Dont use too much force driving out the bearings as you MAY distort the housing...
