power steering idler pulley

Post by popeyehj60 »

Hey
Ive just replaced me power steering pump on a 1982 hj60.
when i start it now the pulleys get real hot and start melting the belt.
now im thinking that ive put the pulleys on wrong,

can any one post up a pic or diagram of how the pulleys go back on with washer etc etc
it has the idler pulley that does the tension
ive checked my engine manual and it had nothing on the pulleys,

G'day mate,
I had the same issue when I replaced the power steering belt in my 1984 HJ60 (I'm assuming it's a similar setup to yours). You tighten/loosen the adjusting screw on the idler pulley to get the tension right and then adjust the lock nut on the idler puller so that it's "tight enough" but don't do it all the way up as this increases the friction on the idler pulley so much that it doesn't spin (and so the belt spins on the pulley and melts).

I just put a white marker dot on the idler pulley and kept adjusting it and checking it until I had it just loose enough to allow the pulley to rotate.

Hope all of that helped,
Cheers,
Toby.
