Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Does anyone know if motorway tyres are still around makin their mogrels? someone told me they'd shut up shop but they weren't sure. Read in a magazine about these cheapies and was all enthusiastic about getting some weekend tyres but don't know now

If they'r not can anyone suggest a reasonable and realatively inexpensive set of weekend mudders? how do second hand go and how do i check em thouroughly?

Oh and another quick q... when i bought the fez my tyres (Radial Nexen 30x9.5 R15's) were at 30psi and have been ever since, for onroad anyway, should i set them back down to the recommended 23psi or is 30 correct for the tyre size?

Pressure - look at the wear pattern, if centre worn more than edges then too high and vise versa.

Out of curiosity how many of you have your front tires down to 23psi as per the instructions?

I have 31' maxxis on my Rocky tray and run them at 25 psi in the dirt and 32 on the ashpalt .

Mongrels - 25 on the road, around 10 off road.
Swampers - 20 on road, around 8 off road.

Thanks for your replies guys my tyres seem to be wearing evenly but i'll keep an eye on them.

I'm goin to call fourby's in moorooka and see what they've got (any suggestions on what i should ask for?). Has anyone bought from them before? or can anyone suggest any other reputable 2nd hand tyre seller in brisbane that i could get a set of chunky weekend tyres from?

ask them for the silverstone extremes. they come in a 31x10.5x15 which would fit nice with a 2" spring lift and 2" body lift. They have the same tread pattern as the mongrels and the simex centipedes.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Unfortunately my current budget doesn't stretch far enough to lift the fez but i think it'll be able to manage some 2nd hand weekend mud tyres. Though my I'm not sure after today.

Hit up Ripley with a couple of guys one had a sierra with recent 2"lift and chunky mudders and he was struggling and getting stuck on some parts where the fez didn't miss a beat (considering my fez is stock as a rock, only minus a swaybar, with A/T's it was a real supprise!). We were trying to work it out and all we could put it down to was that his suzi was maybe to light coz all he was doing was digging holes and getting no traction. Is that possible? has anyone had that problem with mud tyres on their feroza or is the feroza heavy enough?

It was also kind of sandy but I would've thought the mud tyres would still perform better.

If you where outperforming him with A/Ts it would probably be due to one of the hundreds of other variables in 4wding, like wheelbase, the line driven, each cars COG, driving style/skill, weight etc... not the type of tyre.

With very few exceptions, a muddy will nearly always beat an A/T.

As for muds that you want, how cheap is cheap? nankang mudstars can be had for a fair bit under $200ea and alot of people like them. Maxxis buckshots wouldn't be too much more either I think. And if only drive on 4x4 trips they should last you years.
